Title: How to configure two separate volumes (two disks, but not RAID or JBOD)?
Post by: zhyla on October 06, 2010, 07:29:37 PM
I have two drives for my DNS-321.  I put one in, formatted, copied all my data to it.  I now want to install the 2nd drive and set it up and a 2nd volume (I want to store daily snapshots on it).  But I couldn't figure this out in the web GUI.  It seemed like it would let me change the RAID setting (Tools->RAID) to RAID, JBOD, or single disk.  But it doesn't let me choose which drive and it seems like it is going to re-format the previously set up drive which I'd like to avoid.

Am I missing something?

Unrelated:  I noticed once I plugged in the 2nd drive that the new drive was labeled "left" and the previous drive, which was labeled "left", is now labeled "right".  Weird.  Makes me nervous, I think I'm just going to go by serial numbers from now on.

Changing from a Standard Volume to a RAID configuration will require reformatting both HDDs. You can format the second HDD as a Standard Volume without impacting the first HDD.

Ok, I didn't think this was relevant but maybe it is.  Previously I had set up both drives as RAID 1.  Then I removed one drive and changed to single disk.  Maybe this confused it?  I'm not sure where to go from here, I want to use the 2nd disk but avoiding reformat of the disk in use.

Well heck, I'm a little confused but I plugged the 2nd drive back in and it came up with two single disks.

It appears that with just the left disk installed the left disk comes up as hda.  If both are populated then the left is hdb and the right is hda.  This is confusing and annoying if you're using fun_plug since adding a drive un-fun_plug's the system.

I know what you mean. . . the HDD handling is not very intuitive.  Each HDD has a unique hidden identifier and the public volume names are fixed based on the slot the HDD is located.
