Title: Unable to detect DNS-323 via Device Manager or via Network

Hello Everyone:

Setup:  I currently have 2x DNS-323 Units.  Both Units have 2x1TB Raid 1 configuration.
              I have a Windows 2003 server setup with Windows 7 on my computers.
              Both Units have version 1.09
              Both Units have LLTD Enabled
              Both Units have DHCP Disable

Problem I used to be able to have both units displayed under the Device Manager (Storage 1 and Storage 2) as well as under the Network display.  For some reason I have lost the display of one of the units (Storage 1) but not the other (Storage 2). I can still access the unit by using D-Links Easy Search Utility and Map the drive however I cannot do the drive mapping via the desktop (either windows 7 or Win2003 server).
 

Has anyone had this problem and if so were you able to resolve it.  Thanks for any input.

I have also lost both my NAS boxes on a netbook with Windows 7 Home Premium.  They were on the network map then poof gone.  Second time for me.  Last time I restored the entire drive back to a time when it worked.  Then for two months I could see them then poof gone again.  Been reading and trying some of the fixes some people have used but no go.  Grrrrrr.......

First question - did you have the DNS-323 at a static ip address, or at least a DHCP reservation?
Second question - can you ping it at the aforementioned static ip address or reserved DHCP address?

The Windows Vista & Windows 7 network maps are not reliable, let's start by troubleshooting the failure in a systematic fashion.

gponcho - you might need to take a look at your windows firewall or whatever other security suite you're running.

Hi,

 To Answer some of the questions:

1. Both units have a static IP 192.168.0.5 and 192.168.0.6
2. I have verified that the firewall is not blocking anything. Both units have been setup the exact same way excluding the name and IP address. Both units are in back of the firewall.  I am using Norton Internet Security and I verified that windows firewall is disabled on the computers.
3. As I mentioned the same problem is occuring on my Win2003 server (Cannot be detected via Device Manager nor Via Network)

4. As I mentioned I can see one of the Units and not the second unit which I was able to see before. Nothing was changed/modified either to firewall or on the units themselves

As Fordem asked- can you ping them?

What benefit is there to see either NAS on the network map or device manager?

Sorry I forgot to mention that. Yes they are both pingable.

As to the other question.

  I keep losing my network connection to the unit that is not detected and then I would have to run the D-Links Easy Search Utility to remap it again.

I do not have to do this to the unit that is found in the Device Manager.

Ping is a utility used to test connectivity - so when you think you've lost the network connection, ping the device - if it responds, you have a working network connection.

What we are doing here is defining the problem - so, if you can, as you say - a) ping the device, and b) remap it using the ESU, then the network connection IS functional, and the problem is most likely on the Windows side of things - the question now becomes why is Windows (or your application) not communicating over the network - this points back to your security suite, I'd suggest uninstalling it, let's just say, I've seen security suites that continue to block after they have been disabled and I have a personal dislike for Symantec products.

I can't tell for sure, but it might be a "power struggle" between those machines on who is the master browser. If I'm correct, then it's a configuration issue you can't simply resolve from the admin web interface.
