Title: No LAN Connection
Post by: b_ilse on November 02, 2010, 04:48:54 PM
Last week I left for work and the router was working perfectly. I came home from work and my network had gone crazy. I was having sporadic wireless issues which seem to have worked themselves out. However, the LAN still will not work. I have roughly a 25ft CAT 6 cable running to my desktop that always says limited connectivity. 2 xbox's also cannot connect from a different cable that is run to them. I have Windows 7 on the desktop and it says the DNS is not responding. The router is running version 1.02 and was very stable. There was never any problems for 8 months after getting the settings right and creating a stable build. Any ideas what could be going on?

You have a power spike or a brown out by chance? Have you done a full reset of the router by using the back button? Power or unplug it for 30 sec. Disconnect everything from the LAN and WAN ports. Do the same for your Internet modem? What ISP service are you using? Cable or DSL? Make sure both modem and router sit for 30 sec. Plug in the modem and let it connect to the ISP. Reconnect the WAN cable to the router. Plug in only the PC to the one of the LAN ports in back. Power on the router and see what 7 reports back. See if you can get to the web page for the router in a browser, 192.168.0.1. Let us know. How old is this router?

Yea, I am thinking the same thing. If wireless is working, and your sure your connecting to your network, and NONE of the wired works, sounds like maybe the LAN ports on your router were damaged. Limited or no connectivity is better then "Media state disco" though, so that doesn't fit. I agree Furry, we need more info.

There was a loss of power, for how long I'm not sure but the clock was reset on the oven. That's how I know power went out. I did do a full reset. I removed all cables and let the cable modem, router, switch, and desktop powered off for approximately an hour. I did all this a couple days ago when I tried troubleshooting on my own. I am using Midcontinent Communications for my service. The desktop says it's connected to the network but not internet. I have an IP and all that but it won't let me reach the router homepage to log in. I just tried switching ports from #1 to #4 and it worked for about 5-10min and quit working again.

Is your ISP modem a DSL or Cable modem?

and I presume your getting a internet connection on ur PC when directly connected to the cable modem? In windows we need to clear the DHCP address and flush the DNS. What version of windows do you have? XP, 7, vista?

ok you should be able to disconnect the pc and direct to a lan port on the router. leave off the cable modem for now, just the pc and router and you should be able to get an ip and go to the routers web page. If not, sounds like the ports have been damaged.  :-[

:;Edit:: Yup I would agree. If you can get online direct to modem, but can't bring up gateway of router, router sounds damaged. Kept the steps anyway incase someone else found them useful.

Their Cable. Not too bad of one either. I like what I see anyway. From what your saying, it sounds like something was damaged by the storm, the question is what. Try:

Proccess A

1. Disconnect power, or otherwise turn off all equipment.

2. Connect the ethernet(one you have confirmed working, or a new one) from the modem to the desktop.

3. Turn the power on to the modem. Wait until the lights look normal.

4. Turn on the computer.

If you can't get online then, repeat with the laptop instead of the desktop, using the same ethernet. If you still can't get online then, contact your ISP, because then its likly your modem. If you can, then try this:

Process B

1. Disconnect power, or otherwise turn off all equipment.

2. Connect the ethernet(one you have confirmed working, or a new one) from the LAN (either port 1,2,3,4 doesn't matter) on the DGL-4500 to the desktop or laptop confirmed online through Process A.

3. Turn on the power to the router. Wait 1-2min.

4. Turn on the PC/Laptop. Wait until fully loaded.

5. Try to log into into the by going to http://192.168.0.1 (http://192.168.0.1/)

If you can't, then its your router. If you can, then try

Process C

1. Disconnect power, or otherwise turn off all equipment.

2. Connect the ethernet(one you have confirmed working, or a new one) from the modem to the grey "Internet" port on the DGL-4500.

3. Connect the ethernet(one you have confirmed working, or a new one) from the LAN (either port 1,2,3,4 doesn't matter) on the DGL-4500 to the desktop or laptop confirmed online through Process A.

4. Turn the power on to the modem. Wait until the lights look normal.

5. Turn on the power to the router. Wait 1-2min.

6. Turn on the PC/Laptop. Wait until fully loaded.

If you can get online, was likly a sync issue between the two devices. If you can't, and passed Process A and B, its probably the WAN port on the router.

FurryNutz,
Here's a head scratcher for you, I disconnected power to the modem and reconnected the desktop to the router. Tried all 4 ports and was able to connect to the router homepage without a hiccup. Powered the modem back on, waited for the router to boot up, I can still connect to the router homepage now and still no net. But I can connect to the internet with my desktop via direct connection to the cable modem.

Ok, lets try a different cable between the cable modem and the router. Were getting a connection between the router and PC. Lets see we can get the cable modem and router to talk to each other...Different cable this time

Trikein,
I'm not sure how much you have been following along and I do appreciate all the help you two have been giving me! Back to business;
Process A
I can connect to the internet with the desktop via a direct connection to the modem

Process B

I can now connect to the router homepage with the same set up and modem attached, still no internet connection

Process C
No internet on desktop, but am able to connect via wireless to the DGL-4500 and connect to the internet

And the ISP provider in phenomenal! I couldn't ask for better speeds with the price I pay.

Once you get the cable modem and router connected, see if you can go to the web page of the router and go to the Status page. You can keep everything powered on and connected while you have a connection from the PC to the router. Just refresh the page.

Well I seem to be scratching my head on this one because I could connect via wireless to the net but not on a hardline. Replaced the 1ft cable and seems to be working flawlessly. What I don't get is how! ha. That cable doesn't get messed with. But it appears to be working great now and again I thank you all for the help!

Good to hear. Some times cabling can go back or manufactured badly. I would try this, take that cable and see if you can connect it to a different device to the back of the router or a switch. Test it and see if it still exhibits the same issue or different. I also have a 1ft Cat 6 between my cable modem and the 4500. I hope it lasts. LOL. Hope it works out.

::Edit:: DOhh!! Did it again. LOL. Damn me and my long posts. Heh. Ok, so yea, it was the ethernet between the desktop and router? Was allowing access to gateway but not internet? Maybe packet poss?
