Title: Attached directly to computer as a usb drive

Hi,

  Can the DNS-323 be attached to the computer via the USB port and being detected as a external USB drive?

Nope, at least not with any firmware from D-Link or other sources that I'm aware of.  It's a network attached drive, that's the way it was intended to be used.
