I just moved my really old Windows XP SP3 computer to another room and turned it on with my Cat 6 cable. It worked on my other room with a Cat 5e cable but then the computer says their is a limited connection with the Cat 6.
Also, while it was acquiring an IP Address, it was sending packets but receiving NO packets at all. My router gave it an IP Address of 192.168.0.199 but the computer says its 169.254.44.12
I really don't know what the problem is. I used to use the same ethernet cable with my laptop and it worked. The computer also connected to the internet before but not this time.
My router is a DIR-655, FW 1.34NA, HW A3. I've restored my router and configured it back and it still doesn't work. I tried connecting the computer directly to my modem too but the connection is still limited.

During the move, its possible that something inside got jostled loose. Double check that all your cards are in tight.
The 169 address means it did not get a DHCP address from the router.

I did open up the computer and checked to see if anything was loose but it wasn't so. I even moved the adapter to another slot.
What should I do next? This never happened to me so I am completely blank on how to fix this kind of problem. ???

Before replacing anything inside the computer, try reusing the Cat. 5e Cable and see what happens.
Why make more work for yourself?

I thought of doing that but wanted to see if their are other options before I move the computer, monitor, and all those cables i had to wire throughout the desk then plug it all back into the computer! :o

Are any of the lights blinking on the Network Interface Card when its plugged into the router?

I don't understand, weren't you using the D-Link DIR-655 with the Cat 5e Cable in the old location?
And since you are talking Cable, it is not wireless, but Ethernet. Do you have a Gigabyte Ethernet Card or a 10/100 Ethernet Card? The Cat 6 Cable is designed for GigaByte Speed, where the Cat 5e Cable is not, I believe.
The Cat 6 Cable may be wired a little different or wired incorrectly, if the first time you are using it.

@davevt31 a regular light is turned on meaning its powered on and when i plug the ethernet cable in the second light also turns on
@thecreator I was using a Cat 5e cable at the old location and I thought that maybe it is because of the Cat 6 cable's fault. But isn't Cat 6 backwards compatible? that might be the problem though because my laptop has gigabyte speed while the desktop only supports up to 100mbps.

I don't know. Do you have the Cat 5e Cable handy? Try it and see. Just move the Cat 5e Cable to the new location.
