Is there a simplistic way to rename the volumes. I have a media streamer that sees the NAS through samba but it's annoying that I can't get a more descriptive name. It's been a while since I visited this site. Before it seemed there was a way described here but too complicated for me to grasp.

There is no built-in feature to change the standard volume names (this also holds true for the DNS-323 and DNS-343). I have, however, read about manual methods involving modding the config files to accomplish this.

It will involve modifying the samba configuration files. Obviously, you'll have to have Telnet access to the box to accomplish this.

It doesn't sound like there is a simplistic way to accomplish this. I'm considering abandoning the 321 for a product that has such flexibility if one exists.

There is no simple way that I know of, it involves loading fun_plug on the box and then creating a script that replaces the information on the fly as the box boots.

Wow! You'd really buy another NAS just because you can't easily change the label of "Volume_1" and "Volume_2"?
Why not create some shares with sensible names and remove "Volume_1" and "Volume_2" completely?

I don't know what you mean by create shares. All I know is that the 321 is on my home network via a Dlink router. Included on my network is my media streamer which is a Nixeus Fusion HD (nixeus.com). On the Fusion HD when navigating through samba the drive name comes up as volume_1, etc. Don't know how to set it so it comes up with a meaningful description like family_vids or something.

If you access the web interface of your 321, you'll find you can create shares as well as configure a whole host of other things. Best consult the manual on how.

I followed these instructions for changing the share name on my DNS-321 through the web interface. I think it's just what you're looking for:

This is exactly what I was looking for. Net result = perfecto. Thank you much.
Now all I need to to is figure out how to keep 'web_page' from showing up in shares.
