Title: On Demand PPoE does not seem to work
Post by: aljimenez on April 19, 2008, 07:55:54 AM
In reviewing my logs overnight, the router spent the whole night with loops of:

WAN connection inactive too long so attempting to disconnect
WAN interface is down
Stopping WAN Services
PPP network down
Terminating PPPoE session 0xA231
Attempting to re-connect on-demand WAN connection
...followed by the reconnecting process and doing the above again...

The time interval between the "Terminating PPoE session" and "Attempting to re-connect on-demand WAN connection" was zero. I don't think the on-demand function is working. My DIR-655 firmware is 1.11 2007/12/05, Hardware version A3. Any thoughts why this is happening?   Al

Hi Al,

What Modem Brand and Model is your Router connected to? Do you have a dedicated phone line for your Modem?

How are you connected to the Internet? Who is your IS Provider?

Have you called them to ask if they were having problems?

Router goes through Dlink DSL 2320B modem connected through the phone line. It works flawlessly. One change I made recently was to add a schedule for some of my port forwarding so that the router could disconnect at night when we are sleep. Before this schedule addition, the router was not trying to disconnect as it is now trying to disconnect. My ISP is ATT-yahoo dsl but I don't know why the ISP would be the cause for the disconnect try and immediate re-connects...  Al

Are you trying to use PPPoE authentication on both the modem AND the router?  If so, this may be your issue.  Is your modem bridged or unbridged?  Are you set to PPPoE on computer, modem or Bridge?

Thanks for your detective work. The modem is set to bridge (I'm pretty sure), and the router is set on PPoE. However, you have given me some new material to investigate. Could the modem be the one causing the disconnect/re-connect loops. When I bought the modem, I am pretty sure I set it to bridge talking to it directly attached to a pc. Then I installed the modem, and I don't know how to query this modem now through the router to display its settings. Is there a way to do this, or do I need to connect the modem directly to a pc to query its settings again?   Al

Your best bet is a direct connection PC to Modem. Renew your PC IP address dhcp client in case the modem is not in bridge mode (private IP). If you get a public IP on the direct connect  (or if you looked at the router WAN port IP and it was public). What was the question?

Static your PC in the IP range of your modem IP (view manual) to connect for log in.
