Greetings:
I have ATT DSL. For about the past month, my Internet has been completely dropping out when going through the router. For a while, my DIR655 stopped working completely; I changed to a different router and received a connection for a while and then it stopped working too. I could, and still can, get Internet service when I connect my modem directly to my computer.
Given the above, I felt I might have an issue with my old Modem, a Speedstream 4100. Today, I got a new modem (Actiontec). Through the new modem, I once again established connection, and wireless service, through my DIR655.
However, after a few hours of connection, my connection once again dropped completely. I was able to restore it by turning off the modem and router. Needless to say, this will become annoying it I need to keep doing this.
Given the above, I am wondering if I should update the firmware on my router and if that will help solve the issue. I am currently running Firmware Version 1.11. Any thoughts/recommendations on that?
Also, if it is recommended I go to new firmware, which one?
Additionally, how to I download and install it? The D-Link site gives warnings about updating over a wireless network; that is confusing. My router will obviously have to be connected in order to update it. In short, do I need to somehow hook my modem directly to my computer and download the software and update it somehow or can I just leave everything "as is" and update?
Thanks all for any help.

Hi Matt,
Upgrade the Firmware to 1.21 and you can go back if necessary.
You can download the Firmware over a Wireless Connection, but you can't upgrade the firmware through a Wireless connection to the Router. You need to upgrade, through a Wired Computer to the Router.
Have the Telephone Company check the line from the Pole to your house. It might be bad.

Similar situation here. Our Buffalo router has been working great until a few weeks ago. Bought a D-Link DIR-655 to replace it. Got it up and running today. Tech-savvy son upgraded the drivers on our laptops, and everyone was happy, until it dropped an hour ago, requiring a reset of the router. Son is really frustrated. Thinks it must be the router - not the modem or Comcast - because the router stopped broadcasting our signal. He said if it had been the modem the router would continue to be visible - there just wouldn't have been internet flowing through it.
But you mention the possibility of a problem in the wire from the pole to the house. Could this cause the drop that we are experiencing?
Son notices that many people complain about routers dropping signals and is starting to think there is no good option. I know that there are a lot of confused people and perhaps people just don't know how to manage their routers correctly. Maybe the routers are fine and it is something else.
I did talk to Comcast today and they checked my signal. Of course it is fine when we are NOT having a problem, since the problem is sporadic. How best to trouble shoot?
Thanks in advance-

D-Link seems to be ignoring the fact that there are very large numbers of users with this problem with the DIR-655. It is a major problem and id is clearly the router not the modem or the ISP. ???

I have connection problems with my DIR-655 as well. Here is my set-up...
The following are connected to my DIR-655:
1 Desktop PC
1 D-Link NAS (DNS-323)
1 Dell laptop (from work) connects on occasion.
1 XBox running XBMC
I often have my network connection (any HTTP traffic) go down after about 4 days of continuous connectivity to my ISP. I can use my laptop or PC and can see the NAS and transfer files and watch movies between devices without any problem (through the router).
However, if I try to reach the internet, or log-in to the router to see what is happening, forget it. I need to reboot the router (the hard way).

I only bought my DIR-655 yesterday. I can bring it back. But I NEED a router that works. What should I look for?
