Title: Couple issues
Post by: obie5 on November 29, 2010, 07:28:34 PM
First off hello to everyone.

I tried to update to the 1.23na firmware both by checking for updates and uploading the file directly from my computer. Neither have updated successfully.

Any thoughts? The router currently has 1.15 firmware.

My other issue might be caused from the firmware issue, however I will ask anyways.

I have always used my DGL-4500 as the primary router with wireless disabled. I just upgraded my ISP to Docsis 3.0 which is 30 Meg down and 3 Up.

My speeds are terrible. I used to have a 10.0 Meg service and had no problems maxing it out. Now my DGL-4500 isn't even reaching that mark with my new 30.0 service.

When I unhook it and use another router (Belkin) I hit 28-32 Meg down and 2.85 - 3.50 Up..

Any thoughts? Appreciate any and all feedback.

Thanks guys!

What cable modem did you get. There are and have been others on here with DOCSIS 3.0 and seen up to 75Mb down with there 4500. I only have 10Mb on my Motorola SB6120 I just got a few months back. I wish I could give you more info on higher speeds. I didn't do anything with my 4500 when I changed over. I'm running v1.12 back from v1.15. Both worked great for me. Keep your v1.15 if possible. Have you done a factory reset by chance? How about cabling? Are they good to be sure? Have you tried a different cable as a test between the modem and 4500? What version of hardware is the 4500? A1 or A2? Mines A1. A few have had issues with A2. Just a few.

Give us your layout of your network? Mines Modem using 1ft cat6 cable to the 4500, then 2ft cable to 24port Switch. Ya I've got all Cat6 here running all Gb networking. Let us know and will try and see if we can figure it out.

Review my gaming and gamefuel sticky and see if some of those settings will help you out as well. Last resort, you could update the FW. Lets hold off on that for now.

Thanks for the reply.

My new modem is the Thomson DCM475
http://www.speedguide.net/broadband-view.php?hw=1303

My modem has a 3 ft cat5e cable to the dgl-4500. My dgl-4500 then has the wireless disabled and all 4 ports are linked to data outlets in 4 rooms of the house. So these cable runs vary.

When I did my speed test, I did it directly to the dgl-4500. I used a patch cable to run the test. I then used the same patch cable with the ISP router (Belkin) and achieved my advertised speed.

Link to Belkin router:
http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=459569

My dgl-4500 has firmware 1.15 currently and is the A1 hardware.

I hope to use the dgl-4500 as my primary router and then use the Belkin wireless router as an Access Point.

Thanks again.

Ok, one thing you could try is to set the WAN port speed to 1000Gb as I see the cable modem you got supports that. I would do a factory reset of the 4500 router. Power down the cable modem and 4500 router. Disconnect all LAN port devices on the 4500 accept the test PC for this test. Power up the cable modem and allow it to sync with the ISP. Then power up the 4500 and let it come to ready and gain the addressing of from the cable modem. Do a quick speed test on the internet and see what you get. Change the WAN port speed on the 4500 to 1000Gb and check the test again. If you don't see any better results. I would set up the test PC for a static IP on the 4500 and test again. One thing you can try for testing is to turn off SPI firewall settings, test again and see this helps. You shouldn't have to. Just wondering why your not getting full speeds while connected.  ???

I would also check and see if your new cable modem has any user interface like the 4500 does. My cable modem does and you could try access yours by trying 192.168.100.1 and see if there could be any possible user settings that might affect connection speeds to the 4500. Usually there isn't much to cable modems and there pretty much automatic and DHCP everything. Normally cable modems don't have there own internal routers like DSL modems and looking at your modems specs, I don't see any thing tell me there is one. So it should work just as a modem and pass information to the 4500. I did read in the user manual for the cable modem that it requires the use of a crossover LAN cable instead of a straight thru LAN cable when connecting to a hub or switch. I'm not sure if this has any impact when connected to the 4500 router. Normally the use of straight thru cable is all that's needed. I might contact the maker of this modem and ask for details and see if they have any recommendations. Might also ask and see if there are any compatibility issues, if any, regarding the 4500 router. Some OEMs might do some testing in development to make sure there modems do work with other OEM routers.

If possible, do you have a neighbor or friend that has cable internet that you could take the 4500 and the new cable modem to put on there network and test? I would also have you check a different cable between the modem and router just to be sure. I have seen different cable issues on here and my self. This is just to help weed out possible issues and narrow down where the issue lies.

I doubt upgrading FW would help however we wont rule that out just yet. Let us know how it goes. Hope we can figure it out.  ::)

This router does handle fast speeds. Check out post #4 and others that posted there speed tests here:

I tried placing the 1000Gb in the WAN speed, but each time I hit save it would disconnect. I would then go in to check and it was back to "Auto detect".

I checked the modem but their aren't any options. Just mostly logging information.

I was running this router with my old modem on my old 10.0 service and it was flawless.

Not sure what's going on. In the mean time, I need to create a DMZ for my xbox because my NAT is closed with the Belkin router.

I will keep trying your suggestions. Hope we can figure something out because I love my 4500.

Ok, I suppose you can update to the latest FW v1.23.
Download the zip file and extract the .bin file.
Perform a factory reset of the router.
Then do the FW update. Let it load.
Perform another factory reset and let it reset.

Test default settings then set it up for Gamefuel rules and see how it goes.

After the firmware update:

I got my best so far download of 14.xx down but my upload sucked .33

I then switch back over to the Belkin router and instantly hit 27 or above down and 3.xx on upload.

Not sure if the modem and the 4500 just hate each other or what.

Any chance you could try the 4500 router on a different ISP system? It's possible that the 4500 could be bad however would need to check on a different system if possible. Sounds like if the Belkin router works and gets you up to speed, it's possible that the 4500 might be bad. Like to see if you could check on a different ISP network. Got a friend or family member close by?

My family is on 10.0 services, so i can see if we can max out download and upload should be around 1.00 - 1.29.

I'll let you know the results. Is the manufacturing warranty 1 year?

I will keep you updated

Ya it's 1 yr. Might call up Dlink and see if you can get an RMA. I'm on a 10MB DL with 1Mb up. I'm maxed here too.

ok...well wonder if theres a configuration issue with gamefuel. Save off that configuration to file then go back in and do some configuration and using the sticky. You can take a look at both gamefuel stickys, as the ps3 has some pictures that you can use for reference. Just use the info in the other for xbox LOL. Let us know how it goes.

One more question for ya...

I play black ops for 360 and in the system options online it will show your "bandwith".

Mine only registers 3505 kbps. I think the maximum you can have is 10,000 kbps.

Any idea why mine is so low?

thanks man

Thats a good question, I looked at mine and it reports 1318kbps. I presume that this is what the game is reading. I would suggest asking the makers of the game what those numbers mean. What does it show if you connect directly to the ISP Modem? Do the numbers change?
