Title: Admin Password and Users Auto Deleted / Not Saved ???
Post by: jtma67 on December 08, 2010, 03:51:49 PM
I'm not sure what's happening, but for some reason if I put my PC into standby, and turn off the DNS-323 (because even though the drives go into hibernation, the DNS-323 fan continues to run forever --even though I've select Auto/Low/High in Power Management), and then a day or so later turn everything back on, I wind up with NAS that I can't access.

Two Problems:

Once I recreate these two things... everything function "normally".
I'm on firmware v 1.09

Any ideas ???

Strange. 1 time event only? Make sure to backup the configuration. Maybe it won't happen again. Pretty hard to hit the reset button by accident.

dosborne....  actually this has happened since from the very beginning (I've had the unit up for about a week).  As I was just getting used to the operation of the unit, I thought that I was doing something wrong... but have since been more careful in how I interfaced with the box.  From looking through the forum it appears that I must have some other unique problem going on, as I don't see this issue being addressed.  I'll keep searching, and may wind up calling tech support.  Having to rebuild the password and users each time I bring the system up is not an acceptable mode of operation.

I'll try backing up the configuration and using that to reinstate the system quicker.

Still looking for others to respond and hopefully help.  (I did not accidentally hit the manual reset).

Definitely restore the config rather than manually entering it.

Try a factory reset. Ultimately, sounds like you need to RMA the unit.

UPDATE... Thanks for each of your replies.  As I suspected when I didn't see others having this same issue, that I apparent may have had a defective unit.  Fortunately the retailer that I purchased the unit from was local and worked with me to troubleshoot the issue.  Here is what we found:

I'll update the topic later this week.

UPDATE... Thanks for each of your replies.  As I suspected when I didn't see others having this same issue, that I apparent may have had a defective unit.  Fortunately the retailer that I purchased the unit from was local and worked with me to troubleshoot the issue.  Here is what we found:
  • We first suspected that the loss of Admin password and defined users could be a dead battery (similar to have a dead battery on your motherboard and having the lost configurations). The DNS-323 on-board battery was replaced...no change.
  • Next we swapped my drives for a new enclosure.  Problem cured....but
    • the new unit was a "B" vintage - when the problem unit was a newer "C" vintage
    • the new "B" vintage was using firmware v1.07 - when the problem "C" vintage was on firmware v 1.09
  • So I'm not sure if this is an actual "fix" or not and will have to wait for a replacement of my apparently defective "C" vintage to arrive.

I'll update the topic later this week.

I have seen this on all revisions and it normally points to an issue with the Flash rom being defective. Essentially the settings are not correctly saved in the flash and when the unit is power-cycled, all changes are lost. Now I am not saying that this is the cause but I have seen it cause this issue before.
