Title: DIR655 drops connection every 30 min - Plz Help!
Post by: jake9115 on December 08, 2010, 10:34:54 PM
Hi, I recently bought a DIR-655 to match with my DNS-321 and a gigabit NIC on my PC. I updated the firmware and drivers all around, and have all devices set to 1000(gigabit), using 9k jumbo frames, and static IP's. The speeds are as expected (11MBps write, 15MBps read from DNS-321), and I am very happy with the DIR-655's ability to handle lots of connections for torrents.

However, every 15-30 minutes or so the internet drops -- the blinking blue internet light changes to solid amber, and the there is no wireless or wired internet for about 1 min until it links back up (during this time I can still access NAS tho). Does anyone have any suggestions???

I read on this forum to disable daylight savings time, and to set wireless security to always use AES (no TKIP), but to no avail. The hw is B1, and the FW is 2.00

Any suggestions are welcome!

Not sure about the B version of the 655, but we had been told in the past not to use Jumbo Frames with the 655 as it didn't handle them well.

Just do a search for Jumbo Frames and you will see many entries on this subject.

thanks for the suggestion.

I've tried using or not using jumbo frames. For me there is no difference in rate of connection drop, but it does improve my read/write speeds.

I initially said my internet drops every 30min,... sitting  here it has dropped 3 times in the last 10 min! Please help!

Check software for anti-virus / firewall.  There can be a setting to "not trust" your wireless network SSID.

Thanks for the suggestion.... The problem is, it can't be the firewall or antivirus, because even without a connected computer, it still drops connection. For example, I have a cable modem running an ethernet cable into my wireless router. Nothing is accessing the router, but after about 5 min the internet light switches to amber, and there is no internet for about 1 min while it restarts the internet connection.

I'm desperate people, any other suggestions??

I would give DLink tech support a call, may be an internal issue with your router.

I'll try that, but have a look at these logs and tell me if they mean anything to you guys!

Hi jake9115,

On your Home Network, you have a 1 gigabyte speed. What is the speed that you have with the Internet?

Does your Internet Provider limit your speed for torrents?

Turn off or stop torrents for one week and see what happens.

Hey, thanks for the reply! Every suggestion is really appreciated.

My LAN is gigabit, and the internet is 10Mbps (1.25MBps). My ISP is known to throttle back internet speed if torrent downloading is detected, but I've never seen this effect. My torrent activity is encrypted and unlikely to be detected by my ISP.

Also, I've been using a 5 year-old belkin wireless router up until two days ago when I installed the DIR-655, and I've never had this disconnecting problem before.

Do you guys think there is a certain setting enabled on the router that is crashing or something? Has anyone had a similar problem to this before?

Hi jake9115,

Have you called D-Link Support like davet131, suggested? Even a new Router, could be defective.

I am having the same problem of internet dropping every few minutes. I put in a new router of the same rev and firmware and it does the same thing. A Linksys router works fine though. But I don't want to use the linksys as it has no security features like the DIR-655 does.

DLink has crap for firmware these days. It seems that the Russian hacked firmware downgrade might be worth a try. But I am not sure if it works on the newest hardware revision. But at the very worst I have to throw away the DIR-655...but it's not doing much good now.

Hi mstexas,

Call D-Link Tech Support and if it doesn't work, ask for an RMA. I wonder, if people trying to connect to the Router, is causing an overload and causing the D-Link to Reboot. Check the logs. Have them Emailed to you.

I have been getting the logs email every morning at 9 am or when they are full. Here is the log from yesterday at 9:00 am and 9:16 am and 9:52am all put into one log. It was filling them up so quick it emailed three in one hour.

I don't really see anything that gives me an idea when may be taking place but I would love to hear other views.

Here is Part 1 of the combined log. The other parts will be in a seperate posts due to size.

Hi mstexas,

I assume that you have Hardware Version B1 and Firmware 2.0.

For your Router Logs, you have the Router recording too much information. You have Debug Information checked and possibly Dropped Packets. Remove the checkmarks from those choices.

Debug Information would be useful for a Technician, not someone that knows nothing about those instructions.

You may be dropping the Internet, because the Router is too busy recording everything.

I just wanted to post on this forum to vent.

I have the DIR-655 and it is a total POS. I have never had so many problems with a router before. The firmware updates don't seem to fix anything thing and I want to toss it in the Air and shoot it with a shotgun into a thousand pieces. The thing drops wireless signals every day several times, it logs absolute nonsense like the posts above and none of the firmware versions seem to make a difference. I can't believe this was put into production and sold. It seems like tons of people have these problems. D-Link I have been a long time buyer of your equipment but now I don't know if I would continue, you should recall this pieces of crap.

Phew that felt good. Much better now. THanks

Just as a test, has anyone tried using WiFi mode set to G mode only at 2.4Ghz with and with out any password set? Just curious.  ::)

Those are exactly the same kind of logs I am getting.
I do NOT have debug or dropped packets checked, yet all I get is the same garbage you showed in your logs.

Did we get a couple of lemons, or are all 655's this buggy.

And another thing - trying to navigate from page to page in the router setup is slower than molasses in january.
Even the simple act of UNchecking or Checking an item to display in the logs REBOOTS the router !!!

Un-be-freakin-leev-able !!

For the last 2 days I have had no boxes checked on the log but the setting to keep sending emails does just that and it sends them a dozen times a day because it fills up that often. The router does not work. DLink needs to update the firmware quickly. I have three more in the box that are unopened. Anybody want to buy one cheap?

While we are talking about crappy firmware...what the heck is the deal with making us wait 20 seconds and log back in every time we make one singe change on a page. That is redicoulous. And the 60 second countdown if you click save changes is even worse. I would love to downgrade this POS to FM 1.21. HAs anybody tried yet?

EXACTLY !!!
Any minor change - wait 20 seconds !!
Any SAVE changes - reboot city - wait 60 seconds !!
This router needs help.

well i have found with the hardware version a3 with 1.34na if under qos you turn off automatic upload speed, and if under wireless you turn off auto channel scan you can get it to boot a little faster

Is there anyone from DLink that has determined if this was a bad batch or if the router just sucks in general?

I have never had this kind of problem before and I figure I might just get a new router and toss this thing in the recycle bin. If Dlink can't come up with a Fix I can promise you one thing, I won't be buying another Dlink product again!

I've seen this problem on a brand new D-Link DIR-655, purchased a week ago. Internet connection drops every now and then and requires a shutdown and restart to recover.

I have more problems with the wireless signal going down for no apparent reason. There is another subject for this in the DIR-655 forum.

What I am trying to figure out is whether to try another DIR-655 or switch to a different router. To hear the people talk here, the new revision of this router might be a dog.

It's strange. I replaced my WRT54GS because it kept dropping internet and I had to reboot it at least once daily (I put it on a timer to shut the power off for one minute every 12 hours which worked pretty well unless you were on it during those two minutes each day). I replaced it with the DIR 655 and had problems getting high speed connections initially. However, after about two weeks, it settled down and I haven't had any problems since and it suddenly decided to connect at 300 instead of 130 wirelessly without any changes to configuration. I don't know if something has to burn in on some of them or what, but mine's working great now (knock on wood).

I had the same problem and must have spent 1-2 hours talking on the DLink help line with no success.
I finally returned the unit and within 2 minutes after testing it I was told that it was operating outside of the specifications and this defect was causing the problem.

I was given a choice of my money back or a replacement unit. I hesitantly accepted a replacement unit and it has operated with no problem other than a glitch with the SharePort print utility for which I have yet to find a fix.

What hardware version is the new one you got as a replacement (that is working correctly) ?
