I did a quick search on the forum and didn't see anything applicable so far. Got my DNS-321 setup for the first time last night, and it makes a high pitch electronic-type noise whenever the power is on. It does this even when there's no drive installed, it started the second I plugged it in even before installing the drive. Anyone experience a similar problem?
Thanks!

Can you discern whether the noise is the fan? The most likely source are moving parts -- so you should try to rule out the fan first.

My betting is the power supply brick. Especially if you hear it when the NAS is off.

Definitely not the fan. The fan is off, and its still making the high pitched noise. If I turn it off by holding the button, the box powers down, and the noise stops. When I turn it back on, the noise starts immediately. The fan will then run for ~20 seconds, then shut off (I only have one drive, so it's not getting too hot).

When the NAS is off, no noise. I also moved the power brick as far as I could from the NAS to be sure I'm not confusing where the noise is from, definitely coming from the NAS and not the brick.
When I turn the NAS back on, the noise is back. Temp is ~ 40 degC, so it's not too hot either.

So, said there's one drive installed -- if you remove the HDD, the noise persists?

I left the NAS off overnight, removed the drive this morning before powering on, and then turned it on. Initially no noise, then the high-pitched sound came back after the NAS was on for a minute or two. So it's definitely not the drive, or power brick. Are there any other moving parts in there?

So it's definitely something with the ethernet connection. When I unplug the cat5 cable, the noise goes away. Plug it back in, the noise starts out soft and ramps back up to the high pitched sound.

To err on the side of caution, I suggest you get a replacement DNS from the retailer where you made the purchase or an RMA through D'Link.
