Title: B1 2.00NA DIR-655 DNS Server Timeout / Lockup / Crash
Post by: Stereodude on December 12, 2010, 06:47:55 PM
So I just bought a D-link DIR-655.  It's a B1 hardware with the 2.00NA firmware.  After a few hours the DNS server in the DIR-655 stops responding.  This happens on all of the PCs connected to it (both wired and wireless) who have their DNS server set to 192.168.1.1.  The only way I've found to recover is to reboot the router, change something in router's the configuration causing the router to re-initialize, or to ping an external site from the ping test console.  When this happens the external ISP DNS server are still working (confirmed by NSlookup testing manually setting them).

nslookup when DIR-655's DNS server goes off in the weeds:
Quote
> yahoo.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.1

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.

nslookup using ISP's DNS when DIR-655's DNS server is off in the weeds:

> yahoo.com 209.18.47.61

209.191.122.70

I did some googling / searching and didn't seem to find other people have this specific DNS problem.  Advanced DNS is off.  Did I just get a bad DIR-655, or is this typical behavior?

I have the same problem with the same router.  Strangely I didn't notice it happening for the first couple months of using the router, but it's happened twice in the last two days.

Try turning off Advanced DNS Services? Make sure that the Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses are filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual from the Status/Device Info/Wan section.

Same problem here. The Rev B 2.00NA DIR 655 shoould have a recall issued. But try to get DLINK to even attempt to fix one unit let along 100,000 of them.

Hi mstexas,

Quite possible, that Dir-655 B1 with Firmware 2.00NA was released under a time limit, rather than it never getting beta tested in house.

Hi retu77,

Make sure that none of your computers have a Static Address programmed into them. They should all be Dynamic and have the Router assign them their IP Addresses from the Router.
