Hi all,
Now that my NAS is working again (thanks to all that helped), I can return to a problem that I've been having since I first installed it. The transfer speed from my laptop to my NAS is EXTREMELY slow, whether it's small or large files. Sometimes the transfer speed begins at 2 MB/s, sometimes 200 KB/s, but it always drops to about 100 KB/s within a few minutes, and remains there for the duration of the transfer, resulting in hours sometimes for the transfer.
Sorry if this has been covered, but I tried searching previously on this forum and people that have been complaining about their transfer speeds are experience 4-10 MB/s, so I think that my situation's different.
Again to recap, my notebook's using a wireless connection to connect to my WRT54G v5 router. I've also tried connecting to the router via ethernet to see if it's a problem with the wireless connection, but I'm still experiencing the same slow speeds. My DNS-323 (1.06 firmware) is connected via ethernet to the router, and it's housing 2 Seagate 2TB drives, connected in RAID-1 configuration. (hhmm, actually when I look at the status page, it says that the first drive is a RAID 1 type, and the second drive is JBOD.)
I also have a PS3 connected to the router via ethernet, and it can read 1080p video off of the NAS without problems, so I *think* that there's no problems with transfer speed between those two pieces of equipment.
Please help with my problem!

If you can stream 1080p video from your NAS without stutter I'd assume your issue is between the DNS-323 and your laptop. Have you tried connecting your Xbox network cable directly between the NAS and your laptop? Try that, a known-good cable and disable wireless on your laptop while you try. If the speed increases, the problem is unlikely to be with the NAS. Your laptop network interface will need to have a static IP set on the same subnet as the NAS for the test to work. In your last test, you may have still been using your wireless network, unless you disabled it and set the network interface configuration probably.

You're absolutely right! I connected my notebook to my router again with an ethernet cable, and this time I made sure that the the wireless connection was turned off. As a result, my transfer speed was about 10.4 MB/s.
So I read this quick tutorial here http://www.alanchard.com/dlink323/t_pages/set_static_ip_on_dns323.htm (http://www.alanchard.com/dlink323/t_pages/set_static_ip_on_dns323.htm) on setting a static IP, and it says that I have to assign the IP to my router as well. I also noticed that my WRT54G doesn't allow static IPs to be set. If that's true, then would that account for the super slow transfer speed?

Static IP addresses MUST be set at the device - you cannot set a static address for the NAS at the router, and no, the type of address has no impact on the transfer speed.
Your transfer speed problems are most likely related to the network type (wired/wireless), since a change to wired has given you the maximum throughput that can be expected with a 100mbps connection.

I managed to get higher rates than 2MB/sec over Wireless-N if wired is not an option. You might try HomePlugs, I've been pleasantly surprised by using 2xDevolo AV SE plugs that I get a sync speed over 150Mbps, higher than the physical network interface supports.
