Title: Can't detect USB drives on my 520
Post by: NHRaider on May 01, 2008, 05:22:38 PM
I have firmware 1.05 and have tried to connect a flash drive and a Western Digital Passbook 160GB USB drive.  NO luck.  Won't even detect the device.

I don't think this is a firmware issues since the USB should have been good on 1.05.  Not sure if it matters but I am on Vista x32.

Any help?

How is the drive formated?  I'm not sure, but I believe the 520 didn't support anything but FAT32 for a while, and maybe even in 1.06.  Check the AVS forum thread on the DSM-520.  I know the issue was discussed there.

I believe it is NTFS...I will try to reformat to FAT32 and try that...thank you.

Firmware 1.06 has added NTFS support and multiple partition support. If the drive has a power adapter please make sure to use the adapter. If it seems to not work in NTFS it is a good idea to try it in FAT32 as well.

I am having the same problem with Western Digital Passport 250G, which is formatted in FAT32.

DSM-520 seems to recognize the USB drive but can't index or whatever it is doing.  After a while, it hung.  Sometimes, it shows a message of "...can't load...".  I do have latest firmware of 1.06

Please advise.

Is your external hard drive has it's own power supply or power adapter or USB powered supply. Much better to use external HD with power adapter supplied to it.

My USB WD 250Gig Passport is FAT32 and can't be recognized by DSM-520.  Now, I also have Empex 8gig USB Flash Drive, FAT32 formatted, and it also can't be recognized by DSM-520.

My DSM-520 is nearly year-old and I have several problems from Active-TV to USB drives.  I am trying to contact D-link tech support and the forum over the year but not even one problem is being solved.  I am really disappointed at the product and D-Link.

Yes Sir,
Same here, Western Digital PassPort 160 gig does not see it at all - then states NO USB Present. This also happens on many USB flash drives as well. Using 1.06.1 Firmware. I am very disappointed in this unit and I bought it due to the DS320 I had was so cool and sold it hoping for more and better performance from the DSM520 unit and I have a DSM510 that is really strange, it will not play what the DSM520 plays and D-Link support states that this should not be so . . .  All well.

The USB port supports flash and thumb drives. Some hard drives may work if they are self powered however are not supported and you will see them less likely to work then a flash or thumb drive.
