I just installed this router in my warehouse so that we can use some wireless handheld devices. I disabled DHCP, assigned it an IP and set up a reservation in my Win2000 server. It is connected to a lan port. I am able to see it on my lan. I can ping it internally. I can ping internal network IPs from the router but I cannot ping any public IP's. The SSID is not found on the wireless devices nor a wireless laptop. It is set to visible. Can anyone offer assitance? Thanks in advance.

I don't understand your network diagram. Please replace the word It with whatever device your are talking about and write a flow to the Router and Win server connection.
Win2K server > Lan port of Router - Wan port of router> Business Class Cable modem (Staic IP) or something like that.

3 TI's TO ADTRAN ROUTER TO CISCO PIX TO WIN 2K SERVER TO 3COM SWITCHES TO THE LOCAL NETWORK. DIR-655 CONNECTED TO A NETWORK PORT THROUGH A LAN PORT ON THE DIR-655. WAN PORT ON THE DIR-655 NOT USED.

Second try, just deleted dissertation.
The internal DIR-655 host ping utility probably won't work to public IP. The device is a home router and doesn't support routes to the internal interfaces (LAN).
You set it up as a Bridge/AP/Switch Just make sure you put the right gateway address on your nodes and you should make it to the next hop or Internet.
Your second problem of not finding the SSID is a bit scary. You mentioned it is set to visible is it also set to enabled? Is the router set for the right technology of the handhelds and notebook (b,g, or n)?

And one Plug. You said warehouse. I say DWL-2700AP or DWL-8200AP, better tools for the job.

I took your advice and picked up a wireless access point for the warehouse. I took the 655 home for wireless router use with my cable modem. The setup went fine. I connect to my network at work via a VPN connection from home, and then remote desktop to my workstation or server. I am able to establish the VPN connection but remote desktop does not connect. Is there a setting on the 655 that could be blocking this connection?

Not if the VPN is actually up. Can you ping across, or put any traffic across the tunnel at all? or is it just no RDP?
Once a VPN tunnel is up there is nothing the router can do to effect any particular type of traffic, as it is all encrypted by the time it reaches your router.
Are you using network names (DNS or WINS) to reference your RDP server? Does it work by IP?

What type of VPN is it? Also what firmware version are you running?
What is the position of the NAT filters and the SPI?
