Title: Setting up DIR-655 Email Notifications
Post by: MrElectrifyer on December 20, 2010, 02:56:38 AM
Hi

I have been trying to setup my DIR-655 A4 (Firmware 1.34NA) router to send me email notifications on new firmwares, when the log is full and every Saturday.

So I have a schedule already created for sending the emails on Saturday and I also have the option to send notification of new firmware checked. Now I have settings, similar to the following, under email settings (between {>> and <<}):

{>>
Enable Email Notification: (CHECKED)

From Email Address: example@ymail.com        (A VALID EMAIL ACCOUNT)
To Email Address: *****@yahoo.com        (A VALID EMAIL ACCOUNT)
SMTP Server Address: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
SMTP Server Port: 465
Enable Authentication: (CHECKED)
Account Name: example@ymail.com        (A VALID EMAIL ACCOUNT, SAME AS "From Email Address")
Password: **************
Verify Password: **************

On Log Full: (CHECKED)
On Schedule: (CHECKED)
Schedule: ScheduleName
Details: Sat All Day
<<}

With those settings in place, I went to the Status tab, opened the LOGS tab and sent the email immediately from there. A message box pops up saying it will send the log to the "To Email Address" in the email settings above. I went to my Outlook 2010 email client, which is setup and works with both email accounts used in the email settings above, waited for 2-3 minutes but never received any email. I went back to the router's settings page in my browser (Chrome), opened the log, and noticed these messages about the emailing process:

[INFO]   Mon Dec 20 03:31:42 2010   Failure sending log email - try again in 2 minutes
[WARN]   Mon Dec 20 03:31:42 2010   SMTP client failed to send email
[INFO]   Mon Dec 20 03:31:22 2010   SMTP (Email) server smtp.mail.yahoo.com is at IP address 98.136.185.95
[INFO]   Mon Dec 20 03:37:58 2010   Sending log email after administrator request

Why is this happening ??? Is there something wrong with my setup :-[ Is the email settings affected by any other settings besides the schedule ??? I really want to take advantage of what I have paid for, please reply with a professional 8) answer ASAP, I am fully confident with computers n electronics (I am an electrical engineer).

Change your value for the SMTP server port to be 25 and see if that works.

I had the same problem.  I just left Enable Authentication off, with Account Name, Password, Verify, and Password blank.  This works for routers I maintain for my family using TWC, Comcast, and Cox.

Not sure if this will apply to you, but SMTP mail *must* go through my ISP's server -- external mail servers on any port are blocked by Comcast.

These settings work for me:
 SMTP Server Address : smtp.comcast.net
 SMTP Server Port : 587
 Enable Authentication : <True>
 Account Name : <MyISPAcctName>
 Password : ***
 Verify Password : ***

Result in log:

 Priority    Time    Message
info   May 11 16:39:35   SMTP client success sending email
info   May 11 16:39:24   SMTP (Email) server smtp.comcast.net is at IP address 76.96.62.117:587

Hmm, never thought of that, would you have any idea if Telus does require such stuff? Isn't an email client also based on SMTP, but in that case I am using similar settings to those in the first post and it works. Please reply with a professional answer ASAP, thanks.

Still no luck using my ISP (Telus) email address in place of my ymail domain address :'( Really want to get this feature working, PLEASE D-LINK, send one of your smart computer engineers to give me a straight forward answer to this issue. I  have tried over the phone but those on the other side of the line just keep giving dumb/noobish answers like "ensure you typed in every credential correctly". Please reply with a professional answer ASAP. thanks in advance.

I've been attempting to set up my own router notifications and stumbled upon this thread. After an hour of searching and playing around with the settings, I think the idea here is to have the router emulate you, sending yourself an email.

You appear to have several email accounts that you are using, so you will need to refer to the ymail outgoing email mail settings and incoming yahoo email mail settings.

I believe this is what you need to do to get your router to work:
under tools => email settings

"From email address" = Your_Outgoing_Account@provider.net
"To email address" = Your_Incoming_Account@provider.net
"SMTP [outgoing] server address" = smtp.Outgoing_Account_provider.net
"SMTP server port [very important]" = (refer to the ymail outgoing server port settings)

Check the box for "Enable Authentication" - you will need this in order for the router to emulate you on your outgoing account provider)

"Account name" = Your_Outgoing_Account ID
"Password" = Your_Outgoing_Account ID password

I hope this helps !

If the dual account doesn't work, try using a single account for both outgoing and incoming email notifications

I have rogers as my cable/isp.

When I configured the email setup for the router I had to enter the smtp.broadband.rogers.com as the smtp server address.
For rogers, their servers want to see that it is YOUR email adress that actually "sends" the messges - so make sure (in your case) that it is the TELUS email address you have for the account.

For rogers, also, (from the rogers support web site), they clearly state that their servers require authentication - in this case it is your complete email and your associated password.

You may wish to visit TELUS' internet support pages to see how they require it to be set up to work properly.
Also, I notice you use a different port for smtp.  I use 25 - and that works for me (on rogers).

I just contacted TELUS and they informed me that they are not blocking me in anyway from the internet. That is, there isn't any restrictions on my internet connection. Still, no luck getting my router to send the email log, could it be the router's firewall? I doubt that because whenever i view the log after forcing it to send the email immediately, I never see any information about blocking an IP in the middle of the procedure. All I see is something similar to:

[INFO]   Sun Jan 30 12:13:55 2011   Failure sending log email - try again in 4 minutes
(NOTHING ABOUT BLOCKING IPs IN BETWEEN)
[WARN]   Sun Jan 30 12:13:55 2011   SMTP client failed to send email

[INFO]   Sun Jan 30 12:13:25 2011   SMTP (Email) server plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com is at IP address 98.136.44.53

BTW, the above message was generated with the following settings in place:

ENABLE

Enable Email Notification : (CHECKED)

EMAIL SETTINGS

From Email Address: example@yahoo.com
To Email Address: example@hotmail.com
SMTP Server Address: plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com
SMTP Server Port: 25
Enable Authentication : (CHECKED)
Account Name: example@yahoo.com (YES IT'S THE SAME AS THE ONE ABOVE)
Password: <THE CORRECT PASSWORD>
Verify Password: <THE CORRECT PASSWORD>

EMAIL LOG WHEN FULL OR ON SCHEDULE

On Log Full: (UNCHECKED)
On Schedule: (CHECKED)
Schedule : Send Email (YES THAT'S THE NAME OF THE SCHEDULE I CREATED)
Details : Sat All Day

Gonna give D-Link a call again, hopefully I will be speaking with a non-noobish representative.

With settings similar to myne in place does it still work for you? I 100% doubt that those settings could be the cause, but still gonna give that a shot; D-Link was created by humans, so there might just be a bug there.

UPDATE: Yah that wasn't the cause, but thanks for the attempt, any other non-noobish suggestions would be really appreciated

Hi MrElectrifyer,

Do you have Email Priviledges, that is, Email Addresses from your ISProvider? Like Comcast or Verizon or Time-Warner?

Try using them instead.

Also are using Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail or Outlook or similar program to download all Emails from your Email Account and leaving no Emails in your Inbox online?

Me - I download all Emails store them on my computer. I don't store any Emails online.

Could your Inbox be full, if you aren't like me?

Yes my ISP (Telus) does have such stuff but apparently, the actual owner of the telus account isn't reachable at this moment and to get a telus email, I need that person to authorize it. In other words, I don't own the telus email account, I just manage the electronics and computers in the house.

Yes I am using Outlook 2010 to pop and imap emails from 4 email addresses (a .yahoo.com, a .ymail.com a .gmail.com and a .hotmail.com). So far, I have 0 unread messages and my Inbox contains 17 emails, other emails are moved to specific folders automatically (that's how organized I am, lol).

Guess I will just have to wait till I can reach the account holder b4 I can check that suggestion again, with a little different settings. But it still doesn't make sense because when I spoke to them today, I was informed that nothing is being restricted on my internet access  ???  I'll just keep trying, really want to take full advantage of what I have paid for  :'(

Hi MrElectrifyer,

Try sending from gmail.com account to Hotmail and see what happens. You need to Enable Pop in Gmail for it to work. Is Pop enabled in Yahoo.com or Ymail?

For Outlook 2007: Port 587

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=86377 (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=86377)

For Outlook Express: Port 465

Try configuring for Outlook Express, even if using Vista or 7.

Sorry for the late reply, I just attempted it again using the 465 port, still giving me the same error. But, since  my last 3 posts (not including this on) I seem to have been noticing another message along side the others since I've been making the changes:

[WARN] ...date... SMTP failed during sender/recipient dialog

Does that ring a bell in anyway? Any other professional suggestions would be really appreciated.

Have you enable Pop or IMAP on Gmail.com? Not going to work for either, if not Enabled.

Going back to the settings. Why are you sending through Yahoo.com when the From Email Address is ymail.com?

Question: Why are you putting down your complete Email Address, when it is only asking for the Account Name in Account Name?

Going back to the settings. Why are you sending through Yahoo.com when the From Email Address is ymail.com?

Because the ymail.com domain is from the Yahoo server, plus that is what I use in my Outlook 2010 and it works without an errors.

Question: Why are you putting down your complete Email Address, when it is only asking for the Account Name in Account Name?

That is the account/user name. Just like in Outlook 2010 (which asks for the user name), I use my entire email address because that works both as account name and user name on yahoo. Besides that, I have tried using just the part b4 the @ but that still doesn't work.

Any other professional suggestions would be really appreciated.

Hi shonuff,

Do not send and receive in Dlink Router to the same Email Account. Try sending from a different Email Account or try receiving to a different Email Account.

I have Verizon and I created a secondary Email Account at Verizon and send to my Primary Email Account and works just fine.

Instead of using Gmail, use your ISProvider Email Account. You don't know, if you don't try.

If you have to use different email addresses for the send and reply wouldn't that indicate a software glitch since I can send emails to myself through that email address from a pop client that uses the same smtp info?

Also, if I can send emails using a pop client why would using my ISPs email matter?

the Internet isn't a black-box that nobody knows how it works.... I'm somewhat insulted that you would offer the same solution that wasn't working for MrElectrifyer.

Hi shonuff,

I am surprise that you would not even try it.

See if it works using your ISProvider, instead of Yahoo or GMail.

Tell you what - If you can explain to me (technically) why you think trying my ISPs email address will work - then I will try it.  Otherwise, I'm calling you out as this is a software bug.

Hi shonuff,

Who is your ISProvider?

When I was with Comcast, I used Comcast. Now with Verizon, I am using Verizon and it works just fine.

Never tried Gmail, even though I have an Email Account, there.

Why use a far away Email Account, when one is closer?

So thecreator, is this your technical explanation on why you think trying my ISPs email address will work better then using my gmail account (which works for my thunderbird setup)?

All I know is that I use my ISP SMTP email server address for the SMTP email address box, I then use my netscape.net email address in the TO box and the FROM box is my ISP email address. It works, I get emails every so often from the router to my non-isp email address account that I can look at while at work.

Same problem here. I tried with multiple gmail accounts on port 587 and no luck. also found a bug where the router does not accept any email addresses that start with a number. A4, 1.35 NA.
