Title: File Permissions Issues
Post by: sultansusu on May 21, 2008, 03:55:32 PM
I have file permissions screwed up on and backup that was created using DNS323 backup util.
I can not change the permissions, delete, rename, etc the files via windows. Any way to fix this other then re-formatting the drive?  Telnet? How can I telnet into the DNS-323?

No RAID being used
100gig of a 250gig being used
FW 1.03

Do you have users setup in the Network Access options? Have you tried resetting the unit and accessing the data anonymously or recreating the user?

Hi,

I have faced similar behaviour after updating the firmware to the newest one.
To some folders I cannot copy files to, it gives error about the permissions.
It allows virtually delete a file, but when coming back the folder
the file is still there. Permissions are set right in network access.

Hmm that is very strange I would recommend removing all users and recreate all Users and Network access rules and try again. Have you tried reverting back to previous firmware to see if it resolves the issue or reformatting the drives after the new firmware was loaded?

I think that the problem was with the filenames that had some
"space" characters. After logged in with telnet and removed those
files with "force", everything seems to work OK. I donīt know
the reason for such behaviour, maybe someone can explain that...

I dumped all user & rules with no luck. I did manage to create anouther problem. Now do to the fact that I removed the user with owership to my files I lost ower ship to all of my files and can NOT change permissions tho these files as well (all files on both drives). fortunatly the files reverted to permissions to everyone with full control. Lets just say this is not want I want. The orig problem did not change. I have groupes: everyone & root, read only ; user: everyone r/w. Why does the DNS not have more controll over these basic file permissions?

I dont understand what is going on with your unit you are having some very strange behavior you may want to backup your data and try reflashing the firmware on your unit or reformatting using 1.05 firmware.

Well it only stands to reason that if you delete the user that owns the files, the files owner now reverts to a system default. Yes? I my case the file that were fine are now owed by:
unix_user.502 (JOSHUA\unix_user.502) with full controll. And Groups: unix_group.502 (JOSHUA\unix_user.502) & Everyone with full controll as well. But can not change the owner permissions etc.
The file that were backup to volume_2  have an owner of: root(JOSHUA\root) with r/w control  and with groups of: root (JOSHUA\root) & everyone with read control.
What would the the standard procedure for changing the owner of a file?
How do I insert an image to my post? i see the button, but i can not paste to the window

In your Network Access rules do you have a rule showing Share: Volume_1 Path: Volume_1 User/Group: All R/W: allowed? you may have a BT rule if you are have installed BitTorrent but it should be a single rule.

I do not have any groups defined. I do not believe i have BT installed or running. I have fw 1.03. Were would I find BT settings?

I would recommend updating your firmware to 1.05 and see if you have the same results. Are you running Windows XP or Vista?

I'm running XP. What is the the procedure for a f/w upgrade and reformat of the drives without lossing my data? Can I backup to drive 2, remove drive 2, upgrade f/w to 1.05, reformat drive 1, reinstall drive 2, copy data back to drive 1, reformat drive 2? Without losing my data.

Assuming that you have two separate volumes, yes, that should work - but the fact that you have to ask tells me you don't have your data backed up, what if something goes awry ?

I would recommend backing up your data to your PC. When upgrading firmware your drives will not be formated although there have been instances were the drives format is not recognized on the new firmware and the DNS-323 prompts for you to format when you access the web configuration. The firmware is designed to be updated without this issue but it seems to happen in some cases as explained and is why it is recommended to backup your data to make sure your data is safe.

Probably wouldn't be suggested by D-Link support, but you can get telnet access to the box fairly easily. Check out the link in my sig.

Have same file permissions issue. Clearly not unique to one person or their configuration. Believe is may have shown up after upgrading firmware. Didn't check this function prior to upgrade.

I can't change any permissions on files and all are named with standard Windows file naming conventions.

Clearly a problem that shouldn't be occurring.

I noticed that after updating to 1.05, that users I had previously setup to not be able to access certain files can now browse to any location.  What's up with that?  For example, here is my setup.

Share             Path              User/Group
Volume_1       Volume_1       Me
A                   Volume_1/A   Wife

And yet, if I map the "A" share in windows on my wife's laptop, she can simply move up a directory and can see everything in Volume_1.

Well, I found the problem.  The permissions for Share A was set at 777  ... hmmm

I've given up, I've had file sharing issues for a long time now and can't access folders on the DNS-323 over half my networked PCs. I installed two 500-Gig drives just for media streaming and can't access these drives most of the time for one reason or another.

In particular, Vista and the DNS323 give me lots of problems over my WiFi network and having tried absolutely everything in the FAQ's and forum tips, I've finally given up. The DNS-323 works okay as an FTP server though, so I'm pulling the two drives off and installing a small 160 gig drive for FTP use in the next week or so (better than just throwing it out).

I loved this unit when I first bought it as it seems to work well wired directly over ethernet. But over a wifi network it takes too long to tinker with to get it working. I can't afford any more time and as most here know, configuring a network is hard enough, without the addition of a problematic device.

Some of the main problems I've had now encountered over wifi, having owned this unit for over 6-months include:

- inability to access folders, plain and simple -- just can't get into them

- file permission nightmares, I'm tired of reformatting, resetting to factory defaults and still things don't work properly over my home network

- creating RAID sets, I've given up here as well, the RAID option won't allow me the creation of stripped sets even though the drives are the same make, model and size, so I'm forced to configure each independently, can't gang them together

I have a few other devices over my wifi, including a streaming media box from MediaGate and none of these give me the file sharing and access problems the DNS-323 gives me. Maybe, all problems are solvable with this unit, but you have to jump through hoops and the time involved is way more than it should be.

I do look forward to new firmware revisions though, hoping that things will be fixed eventually.

 >:(   Yes, ditto on all you have said.  I implemente the DNS343 on my network and my graphics department is fully using it, mostly macs, and many of the folders end up with one of the mac users 'owning' it, and other users can only 'read'.  i still can't figure out how o reset permissions, tried ftp and all attempts fail unless I log on as the specific user tha has ownership.

Damned frustrating!

Personally, I have 3 wired computers running Windows 7 (32 and 64 bits)
I also got 1 VM running Windows XP SP3,
2 laptops... Vista Home Premium and Windows 7
1 Media Center
1 MacBook Pro
1 WDTVLive
1 XBox
1 Xbox 360

The Media Center, the Xbox 360 and all Laptops access the DNS-323 wirelessly and I have no problem
accessing / streaming my files / video / music to any of them.
1 Laptop is connecting using 802.11g and the rest 802.11n using WPA2 encryption

All my wired Devices are also working fine and no problem streaming BluRay HD movies to my WDTVLive.

I will also mention that this is done using 3 routers:
WRT300N with DD-WRT installe
WRT610N with stock firmware
WRT54G with DD-WRT acting as an AP for wireless only (no wired connection)

the WRT610N is cascaded with my WRT310N, the 310 being my "main" router,
and the DNS-323 connected to the 610N

Go only problem I have wit the DNS-323 is that it does NOT allows "anonymous" and "passworded" shares at the same time....
