Title: DIR-655 periodically times out (on its side)
Post by: tech1 on June 10, 2008, 09:22:56 PM
I scanned the forums but found no similar problem and I only post on forums when im really stumped.

For a while I've had my router using the vertical stand, so the router sits on its LEFT side. I recently did some remodeling and had to do some rewiring and move my router and modem and so I decided to wallmount the router. the router was pointing with its RIGHT side down instead of its left side, and since then I keep getting disconnected from the internet.

Its not the modem, I plug right into it and it works
I know its the router because the entire network goes down at the same time

I did some ping tests "Ping 192.168.0.1 -t" and let it run about 2000 times, I would get about a 10-15% loss of packets.

I took the router off the wall, put it on its LEFT side (like I had it originally) and put it on the floor, and now it works flawlessly. I do not understand why it works while its on one side and not the other, and im only using the WIRED connections, the wireless always seems to work.

I have tried reinstalling the firmware, rebooting and resetting the firmware back to default through the router configuration and manually with the reset button. All my computers are windows XP pro and my router has worked fine up until now.

About half a year ago I had dlink replace my DIR-655 because it was faulty, so this is the replacement one im having issues with.

Put the unit back on the wall and disable the wireless. See if the rebooting contiunes.

Hi tech1,

Question: Do you have the Router Logs emailed to you from the Unit? If not, I would definitely get the Router Logs E-mailed to you.

Why? I was having so much problems with the Unit rebooting, also, I just figured it reboots, to start fresh. So I opted to have the Logs Emailed to myself. No more reboots. It works flawlessly.

I think there is a bug in the firmware, in dealing with the unit rebooting to clear the logs, when the User doesn't want the logs. Everytime it reboots, it clears the logs. Most direct way for a clean slate.

I don't look at my logs either, check this uptime.
And no it's not fake. :) Oh and yes thats the real MAC address I told my modem to connect with. TW HATES me. j/k.

I'm happy for you that you seem to have received one of the few DIR-655s that actually work.  In reading these threads, I can only conclude that D-Link is not the same company it was when I first used their gear a few years ago.  I wish I had read these before, but it isn't too late for me.  My DIR-655 won't retain a connection--either wires or wireless--for more than a few hours before going into semi-permanent disconnect mode.  And to compound matters, I also bought the matching DWA-652 PC Card, and this is unbelievable:  that card gets almost no signal from the DIR-655 (when it's working) at a range of 30 feet!!  So I plug in my old Belkin Pre-N PC Card and it gets EXCELLENT range and signal strength from the same spot, and deep into my back yard.

So, while you can brag about your gear that is working, understand that most people on this forum who have problems have been given nothing but lip service from you and from D-Link "tech support".  I am so pissed off at D-Link.

Without wasting another moment on this crap, I am going to Amazon right now to get a 100% refund including shipping.  Good luck with your job, since the company will soon be out of business at this rate!

My DIR-655 also reboot when the Wireless has interference with other devices. Finally I found a wireless channel can work with. Even the microwave ovens, 5.8 Ghz cordless phones, wireless baby monitors, wireless television transmitters.

Why the 5.8 Ghz cordless phones? - most 5.8 GHz cordless phones use 2.4 GHz for the return channel, without mentioning that fact anywhere on the box or in the manual.

Sugguest for D-Link: Please add a 2.4Ghz Spectrum Scans function onto DIR-655.

It already does 2.4ghz spectrum scans, thats Auto channel scan.
As for the return channel info, I'll check that out.

The autoscan at D-Link 665 is not very useful. In my case, it show channel 5 or channel 13 is best channel. but actually these two channels are occupied by other wireless devices. Finally I tested all the Channel one by one and Channal 7 is the best and would not make the router reboot. I am wondering is the autoscan use fast scan rate rather than use slow scan rate. A slower scan rate is needed to allow enough time for a (75 FHSS) FHSS (narrow-band frequency-hopper) device to cycle through its pseudo-random sequence and hit the currently monitored channel, or for a DSSS (wifi) device to broadcast at least one packet.

Did you state that your router switches to channel 13?
Also I agree, the channel switching method used is a bit "archaic" at best, but I believe we are working on that as a correction moving forward.

Hi dwatt and Lycan,

There is no Channel 13 or Channel 12 available for the DIR-655 Router, wirelessly. The Channel goes from Channel 1 up through Channel 11.

Hardware Revision A3.

Are you referring to Transmission Rate?

Most likely the confusion with channels comes from different countries with different regs.
