Hi,
Where I work, we are using the DIR-655 router. Every now and again, the internet connection will continuously drop for no apparent reason. Someone mentioned that there may be some program somewhere on the network that was sucking up too much bandwidth. However, I haven't been able to track such a program down.
Is there another reason that I may not know about?

there are some important questions that need to be answered to better troubleshoot the issue your having.
1. when the router loses Internet can you still log into the router and work with it even with out the internet? or is the router dropping the network all together and you cant log into it.
2. what type of ISP are you using? cable, DSL, Static IP, so on....
3. when the internet is lost how are you recovering the network so you can get internet back up?
I await your reply in order to better assist you.

Yes, I can log into the router even when the internet connection is lost. The Network seems to remain active during these internet outages.
We are using a DSL internet connection.
I can still log into the router when the internet goes down and hit the connect button. However, it usually reconnects autoimatically.

oh and the DSL connection is a static IP.

so my first recommendation would be to make sure the auto reconnect mode is selected under the internet configuration page on the setup tab. the other thing would be to try lowering the MTU by about 20 points and see if that helps.

tried lowering the MTU, but that did not work.
