I have a Cisco RVS4000 gigabit router, and a netgear gs108 gigabit switch, and my dns-323 will not connect at gigabit to either. Matter of fact the dns-323 will not connect at any speed to the rvs4000 with any cable, and will only connect at 100 to the gs108. I have tried several different cables either cat5e or cat6 with no luck. I have set the configuration on the LAN page to auto, but it will only connect at 100. Also most of the time the 1000 radio button is greyed out. I have managed to reboot the dns-323 in some manner (maybe the network cable unplugged), and the 1000 radio button was enable. Only to lose connectivity to the dns-323 after selecting the 1000 radio button and selecting apply. And I have tested all ports on both the rvs4000 and gs108, and all other gigabit devices I own will connect at gigabit. I am on FW 1.08.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks

Have you tried connecting it directly to your PC at gigabit and seeing if you can access the nas at gigabit speed using a static IP address?

Thanks. I understood that part, but then because I only have one nic card in my pc I no longer have access to the dns-323 from the rest of my network, which defeats the purpose of a Network Attached Storage. I looking to see if others have experienced incompatibility with the gs108 or RVS4000.

Try to update your NAS to FW 1.09. Check also the firmwares of your router and switch.
CAT5 or CAT6 doesn't make the difference (I use CAT5 here and have fine 1 GB access to my router from PC, laptop and DNS-323) but the quality matters (connector type, accuracy of crimping, contact surface).
What kind of cables do you use, shielded or unshielded ones?
If the NAS is near the router try unshielded cables (UTP) to avoid ground potential problems.

I've had my DNS-323 going on four years now and two of those years it's been connected to a Netgear GS108T with no problems, the previous two it would have been connected to either a Netgear FS726T or FS728TS and it has always autonegotiated flawlessly.
Prior to purchasing the GS108T I did at one point have it directly connected to a PC, for the sole purpose of experimenting with jumbo frame sizes, as none of my switches supported jumbo frame, and here also there were no problems with the connection speed.
I have seen reports of failures to autonegotiate, but not personally experienced these - but - have good reason to believe that in many cases, cable & specifically termination quality, is a major factor - gigabit networks require all four of the pairs in a CAT5 or better cable to be correctly terminated, any split pairs or poor termination WILL cause problems due to crosstalk.

It wasn't intended as a perminant solution, it's a troubleshooting step. If there are no problems between your computer and NAS - the issue is elsewhere.

The problem IS elsewhere - it's between the NAS and the router/switch

I appreciate everyones input. After the holidays I will try directly to my PC, and I will try other cables. I have tried a few other cabels so far. I have cat5e UTP cables, and one cat6 utp cables that I have tried. I can also check my firmware level on my router and switch. I might be upgrading to FW 1.09 anyway for another issue I am tring to get rid of. My setup is plain vanilla concerning the dns-323, no tweaks or hacks.
