Hi,
i just bought 2 x 2tb hard drives so when i plugged them in, the system requires me to format the 2 harddisks, which i followed instructions. previously, i only had a 750gb hard disk in my dns343.
when i tried to access my prev data stored on the 750gb harddisk, no data could be found. i have formatted these hard disks as ext-2 and under individual disks.
i am very sure i did not format the old hard disk-how could this have happened?
any way for me to salvage the data from my old hard disk? any software to recommend?

Assuming the 750 GB hard drive was not touched during the formatting of the new drives, if you place the 750 GB drive in slot 1 you should be able to see the data.
When you formatted the two new drives, did you change the slot location of the 750 GB drive?

hi, thanks for replying.
nope, i did not change the location (it has always been in slot 1).
when i plugged the new drives into slot 3 and slot 4 (bottom 2 slots), the system prompted me to format the 2x 2000mb drives, which i did.
when i rebooted, all my 3 drives showed zero data.
what could have happened?

From everything you've described (and as you originally surmised) it sounds like the drive was reformatted. As to why, I'm not sure - perhaps you inadvertently selected the first volume for reformatting, there's no real way to tell. There are plenty of software tools available to recover data on reformatted drive -- you'll need one that can read EXT volume formatting. Some tools will allow you to test the product to see if it will work for you.

I suggest that you read product reviews of recovery apps through the online version of some industry magazines (e.g. maximumpc, pcworld, pcmag, etc). After you find some reputable products, see if they have trial versions to test out.

Many of these applications (as a trial) will attempt to read the drive and list files that are potentially recoverable -- this information (at the very least) will tell you if there is any data to be salvaged.

Same issue occurred upon initial set-up of 343 early last year. Attempted to recover 850Gb of media files with various programs to no avail. Recovery software may restore file but data turned up unrecognizable/corrupt. Painful lesson learned.
