Title: Problem with drive
Post by: g2 on July 14, 2008, 06:41:34 PM
Hi,

I have these, as reported by the configuration tab:
 Vendor      Model                      Serial Number              Size
 Maxtor      6Y120M0                   Y3LDM0GE                    122 GB
 WDC        WD7500AAKS-00RBA  WD-WCAPT0385644     750 GB

I have no issue with the older Maxtor.

The WD 750GB on the other hand is pretty flaky, and has been so pretty much since it's been installed in the DNS-323. It was functioning perfectly in a desktop prior to that. This drive is in the approved drive list.

Perhaps 1 time out of 3, it will "hang" when accessed to write, sometimes even when accessed just to read, and by that I mean I can hear the drive clicking 6 times every 2 seconds (head resetting to track 0 or something?) and does this non-stop until I reset the NAS, usually by shutting it down from the front power button but some other times I have to unplug it.

I am running 1.05, and this was happening in 1.04 as well, if not prior. I've this NAS for 7 months.

Anyone has similar issues with this drive, or with large drives, or with WD drives in general?

I'm really getting fed up with how unreliable the DNS-323 is with this drive, yet I know the drive is fine in a desktop, and nothing special is reported through the SMART function. The drive is 6 months old and isn't used for much more than backups a few times a week.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Thought I'd post back on this problem, as it may help others.

A few weeks ago, after trying different things to solve this problem, I simply put the DNS-323 on its side so the drives would be horizontal... and the WD hasn't failed since ::).
