Title: Wireless problem, Vista-ok, XP-nothing
Post by: ochssk on December 28, 2010, 07:09:24 PM
I recently upgraded from a DI-624 to DIR-655.  My wife's vista laptop connects without a problem, but neither my work XP laptop nor my home xp machine will connect wirelessly.  I did not have any problem with the DI-624.

I went through my wife's laptop network settings and made sure the XP machine was the same.  Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks

working adapter....driver software for XP.....firewall settings....wireless encryption (key etc for WEP or WPA or WPA2).....DIR-655 may be set for .11G/N and not .11B....maybe check for .11B/G/N setting in 655's setups...

Are XP machines using a pre-set LAN IP ? vs DHCP from the 655 ??

Is the XP Wireless AUto Configuration overiding the native adapter utility for wireless connection ?

All machines are G so B/G/N should not be the issue.  WPA2 or WPA keys are correct and firewalls on the XP laptop and XP home machine are not the issue.  The wireless card on the home machine is a linksys 2320.  The XP laptop runs SP2 and the home XP machine runs SP3.  Everything worked fine on the DI-624.  DHCP is set to the router.  Hmm.  I could try to assign a specific IP address through the router.  Oh and wired connections with the XP machines work fine.

It's probably something simple but I'm losing what little hair I have left trying to figure this one out.  I do have a new wireless card coming from Newegg for the home XP machine and will be curious to see if that does anything for me.

Did you use the same SSID when changing to the new router or did you create a whole new network?

I used the same SSID.

I would try a new wireless network as network items are remembered through the MAC address.  Create a new wireless connection on the router and then go to the XP machines, delete the old network and try to add the new one.  The XP machines could be still looking for the old MAC address from the 624.

Well, I got the laptop to connect so the only issue is with the home xp machine which is a new build.  I'm more convinced it's a hardware conflict on the computer side.  The LAN and wireless are both atheros chips and the LAN will hic-up when I remove the wireless drivers.  I may try letting windows install it's preferred driver and see if that makes a difference.  The new wireless card will be a cisco chip, and will hopefully arrive soon from Newegg.

Success finally.  I installed a new wireless card and forced the router to use channel 6 only instead of auto scanning the channels.

A wireless adapter will not force a change of radio channel on the router.  The problem was the original wireless adapter that seemed to not work with your new 655.
