Post by: kaine13x7 on December 28, 2010, 11:02:01 PM
Hello,

For the past few months i have been having rather slow download speeds on my dgl 4500.  Modem to computer i get 15mbit down and 4-5mbit up. Modem to dgl 4500 over wired and wireless i get 3-5mbit down and 4-5mbit up.  Im on 1.23na FW and have no clue.  Any help would be appreciated

What is your ISP service? Cable or DSL? Have you made any changes to the 4500? Do you use static IP addresses or DHCP addresses?

Cable. No changes. DHCP.

What ISP cable modem do you have?

Have you tried a factory reset of the router from the Tools/System menu?

How about setting up a Static IP, set Firewall to EndPoint Independent for both TCP and UDP. Make sure DNS relay is enabled. Turn off any Advanced DNS services.

Hey Furry... long time since the last post.

I am actually having the same exact problem as kaine with download (upload is fine). I should have 30 down (as I have experienced in the past), but I am barely getting 16 wired and 12 wireless. I have the exact router setup described in the sticky for the Xbox... with static IPs for all devices on the network. Using firmware 1.22NA. FYI- wireless is in g only mode at 2.4 with auto channel scan.

My ISP is Optimum Online (Cablevision).

Here are just a few things to try to do to narrow down what the problem could be:

1. Save the Configuration. Do that first and foremost. Don't want to experiment and end up making it worst.

2. Bypass the router and go direct to set a control at that particular moment. Could be your testing direct at night, and router by day, and giving you a false negative. **Also* check what your DNS servers are direct to modem and write them down.

3. Reconnect the router and go hardwired using the same computer you tested wired on. If slower, continue on, if the same, no problem found.

4. Disable Gamefuel. Save settings, try the test again. If faster problem found, if slower, re-enable it and continue to next step.

5. Disable advanced DNS(If not enabled, skip this step). Save settings and run the test again. If no change re-enable and continue.

6. Disable DNS relay and manually fill in your DNS addresses. Save settings and test.

7. Make sure any AV is turned off. Alot of times when a new connection is tested, it can be given different security settings that effect testing. Norton/Mcafee are the two biggest culprits of this.

If you don't know how to do some/all of these tests, respond and I will break them down specifically. Good luck.

I have Cox HSI, yes i have tried a factory reset to no avail.  I have firewall set to endpoint independent for tcp and udp.  Disabled advanced dns and enabled dns relay with no luck.  Also setup a static up and not working ><

Did all this with no luck.  In logs i have noticed quite a bit of this...

Blocked incoming TCP connection request from 221.192.199.48:12200 to 72.222.213.76:27977

Blocked incoming TCP packet from 68.71.209.230:80 to 72.222.213.76:58977 as PSH:ACK received but there is no active connection

Blocked incoming TCP packet from 72.14.204.104:80 to 72.222.213.76:59020 as FIN:ACK received but there is no active connection

What is COX HSI? DSL or Cable?

You tried all that today? To the letter, or you tried that here and there over the last week and maybe just skipping a step or two you think isn't the problem?

Because if the former, I only have one other idea, and thats turn everything off. Gamefuel, firewalls, NAT, put the PC in the DMZ, everything. Turn off logs, turn off anything and everything that could have any effect on throughput. If still a issue, I am out of ideas and suggest you go with another router. Sorry.

Yup, I am very familiar with Cox HSI. No conflict there. Don't have any other idea, sorry. If you tried a factory reset, all those steps, and disabling everything in the router, would have to either be firmware or hardware.

Which firmware should i be using?  I have a config file if anyone wants to look at it...

you could try v1.22 or v1.21 however not sure if that would work. Could be that you might have a bum unit. I can look at your config file when I get home this weekend.

I experienced slow speeds a while back after I upgraded to the current firmware but loaded a configuration file from an older firmware.  To correct this I did a factory reset on the router, flashed it with the latest firmware, did another reset and re-entered my settings.  Then speeds returned to normal.

Are your devices on static IPs that you manually entered or did you do it using the router's DHCP feature.  The later is the way to go.

Did you test while every other device was off?  I've seen an infected PC slow down a network.

I had problems when i used static ip so i went back to dhco. Im going to try that now in regards to the firmware and re enter the settings manually. I will report back shortly, thanks.

Everything is fixed.  I called cox after the reset/re enter all values didnt work.  They informed me there is a router that is messed up somewhere and directed me to azspeedtest.cox.com and the connection worked fine there.  I tried a server in san jose on speedtest.net and it confirmed everything.  There is a messed up router somewhere, but its not mine =)

Thanks everyone!

Huh? Could you explain? Wherent you using the same test hardwired to modem that you used connected to router? A bad route wouldnt cause a problem just with your router in place, it would effect the test with or without the router.

I was but apparently from what the cox hsi rep told me the router is very off and on.  They are still trying to locate it.  I guess i got really unlucky when i tested via modem > laptop and via router > laptop as they were within a 5 min window.  Shrug.

Hmm. And a T1 tech told you? DId he have you do a traceroute? If not I smell BS. Not from you, but from the rep. Not that he is wrong, but I doabt he would know such a thing. But it works, thats the important part I guess

Not a traceroute but i did a speedtest on azspeedtest.cox.com and also chose a server west of me in cali instead of one in arizona on speedtest.net and both tests were 15+mb/sec.  The router acting up is most likely in phoenix, may or may not be on cox's network.

Kinda odd that a router elsewhere would be hosing up his connection. However if it's hosing up his connection, it's probably messing up everyone else on the same line too.  :-\

Could just be on the route from his ISP to the testing site. That I see all the time with those tests. I can sometimes get faster connections to JAPAN then I can get out some of the servers in Ohio, don't ask me why, but yea. Speedtest.net is known for having all kinds of constintly problems..its just the standard because its easy to use and pretty. It over simplifies, and even misrepresents, the truth most of the time though.
