Title: DIR-615 drops connection (Hardware Version: C1, Firmware Version: 3.11NA )
Post by: vityok on December 30, 2010, 06:38:37 PM
After 1.5 years of working great, my router started dropping connection and got progressively worse. When my computers loose connection, they either generate message that there is no IP address or duplicate IP address on the network. I think there is something wrong with DHCP. When I restart the router it works for awhile, then drops connection again. I've reset the router many times and again it works fine for a short time, then the same thing happens. Also, I could not upgrade firmware (I got message that it's wrong hardware for the upgrade, however everything was correct).

What I don't understand that since there are no moving parts and nothing to wear out, what can possibly happen after 1.5 yrs working fine? You would expect this to happen from day 1, which will indicate the unit is defective, so you would return it and get another.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Chips and components do fail even though there is no moving parts :o...

Try upgrading the firmware to 313NA.  You may have to do a hard reset by doing a 30/30/30 reset.
hold the reset button for 30 sec keep it press and disconnect the power  for another 30 secs and plug power and continue to hold reset for another 30 sec.  during the process don't release the reset button. You will be holding the reset button for 90sec.
After the 30/30/30 -- remove power for another 30 seconds and reconnect (without holding the reset button).
point your browser to 192.168.0.1 and flash away.
You may want to use firefox browser... there are some that had issues with other browsers and getting the same error message as you are getting.

I would recommend doing a full reset after you save off your current configuration. Upgrading to newer FW might not fix what has been working for a period of time and now seems to not work. Loosing connection also might be seen on the router however the router is just reporting that there could be a possible disconnection upstream from the ISP modem. What ISP service do you have? DSL or cable? Other possibilities of wireless disconnections could be that other wireless routers have moved into the area.

I would set static IP addresses for all of your wired and wireless devices. That way all of your devices will have known addressing that wont change. Switch from mixed mode to single mode G with out a password to test initially. After testing, then set a password. Turn off features of the router that are not used, things like WISH or Protected WiFi. If you need them later you can always turn them back on.

Let us know how it goes.

If the factory firmware upgrade doesn't solve your problem, might want to check http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=13599.0
