Title: DIR-655 as access point
Post by: afab on December 31, 2010, 06:24:52 PM
I recently upgraded my network because my DIR-655 started to drop connections.  My new routers (a Netgear ProSafe VPN Firewall SRXN3205) is working great, but I'd like to re-purpose my D-Link as a wireless bridge.

According to Netgear support, I need to link my DIR-655 to another access point connected to the network over wired Ethernet.  No problem there; I have a DAP-1522 connected via Ethernet on the floor directly below the location of the DIR-655.  I was under the impression that although the signal was going through the floor, the physical distance to between the two devices would be sufficient to make the connection.  No joy.  I use the push-to-connect buttons on the two devices, but they do not connect.  Is the floor the only issue?  I do have an ANT-24 antenna extension for the DIR-655 router -- would that make any difference.  As I say, the physical distance between the two devices is less than 10 feet.

I'm open to suggestions on how to get this configuration to work.  I could try and put a second DIR-655 next to the Netgear router on the same floor as the other AP, but the distance would be closer to 30 feet away and around a corner.  I really don't want to crawl into the attic to drop new Ethernet cable.

Thanks in advance and to all a very happy new year.

View the setup page without a style to find bridge mode.

Setting > Network Setting

When viewed without a style you will see:

I'm sorry ... I don't understand "without a style."  I log into the setup screen for Network Setting, I have Router Settings and DHCP Settings.  I want to set this up as a bridge -- I just don't see the option of router or bridge that you describe.  Can you elaborate please.

You need to change the view setting in your browser.
Go to the Router setup page that has the Netowk Setup, then change your style view there.

For IE:You want to press the Page Button, when the bar opens up you want to select the Style one and then select No Style.

Wow. Thanks.  I'd have never known that there was a style setting like that that would change my GUI in the setup screen.  How did you know about that?  I could not find anything about that in any documentation that I looked at.

That said, I changed the setting from router to bridge, plus I went into the Netgear router setup and added the IP address and MAC address of the bridge to the list of devices on the network.  I also rebooted the router.  I'd have thought that the bridge would have been visible to the router and the network, but no joy. When I try to ping the 644, I get a message Destination Host Unreachable.

I have a DAP-1522 on the floor below and I tried the push-to-link on those two devices, but again, no luck.

I'm open to any additional suggestions.

Addendum:  OK, got 'em both on the same channel now.  For a while they were transmitting on different channels, which could have caused the problem.  When the D-Link is physically connected to the Netgear, no problem. When I try to attach wirelessly, no joy. What a headache.
