I have this showing up in my logs at startup of the DNS-323.
it only shows up on startup. i can log in, out change settings around and nothing happens with the log that shows any new "fan can't stop, check it please" message.
I can adjust the fan speed setting, from auto to always on, and the fan responds by running fast, then slows down but not off. and for auto, it just runs on low.
i have my hard drives set to sleep after 5 minutes, but fan stays on low anyway.
that's my description. is this an issue with the firmware? can alt-F fix this? D-link has not that i know of.

This isn't a known issue that I'm aware of. Which hardware revision have you got?
It sounds like the fan sensor is faulty, rather than the fan itself, but you could try a factory reset - you never know, it might help.

where can i see what version i have?

There's a label on back side, it should have a "Rev. ...." part.

Rev. C1
original F/W 1.08 (still running that)

Wasn't there some fan related issues with C1? I'm not sure if this is one of them...

I have the same problem. Rev C1, Firmware 1.09 (I had 1.08 before). Fan never seems to shut off; HDDs power down after 5 minutes; Fan Speed Selector is set to Off/Low/High; Idle temp is ~85F to 90F with HDD off, max of 105F when HDD on.

you could try the 1.10 beta firmware?
