Title: Degraded Raid 1

Hi

My system status has repeatedly gone to :

Sync Time Remaining:    Degraded

I have however never gotten an alert mail neither have the LEDs on the box indicated any problems. A reboot and 'manually rebuild' on the Tools->Raid screen did fix this temporally so was assuming the disk is not actually broken. I'm currently taking a copy of the volume and am wondering if it is worth to reformat and see if it works then before actually getting a new disk ? Any ideas ?

Backup your data before doing anything. You can try formatting and reconfiguring as RAID1, but if the problem persists you likely have a drive issue.

If you are running 1.08 firmware or above, there is a scandisk tool you can use within the web admin. That might tell you if there is an issue with one of your drives. I'm not entirely sure what it does though.

You might also try connecting each drive to a computer directly if possible, and to download and run manufacturers diagnostics on them. This will hopefully report any physical failure.

In case someone is interested : Tried out everything but turns out the 323 thinks the disk is broken. Put in a new one and everything works again nicely.

Only thing I do not understand : I tested the disk with an USB adapter running the WD diagnosis tool, however did not get any error... however the SMART status can't be read via USB. Just out of interest : Is the 323 checking the SMART status of the disks ? What else could have caused the 323 to think the disk is defect ?

Out of curiosity, what make and model was the disk in question?

No - as far as I'm aware - the DNS-323 does not check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drives.

Hi fordem,

what does "RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two." mean? If I configure 323 with RAID1 and two identical hard drives? doesn't it duplicate the data on two hard drives?

Yes, it does, but that doesn't mean it's a backup of your data.

RAID1 is intended to reduce downtime and the associated impact & cost in the event of a disk failure, rather than to safeguard against the loss of data, disk failure is neither the only, nor the most common cause of data loss - to give you just one example, with your RAID1 array duplicating your data, if you or someone else accidentally deletes a file, it's gone - from both disks.

Now let's extrapolate, data wilfully deleted by a disgruntled employee, data corruption due to a virus or power glitch, system compromised by a hacker (it does happen - he's not interested in you or your data, but in taking control of your system and using it to target someone else - and the easiest way to a "clean" system is often a reformat & reload of the OS)

the disks are WD5000AAKS, the new one works great again (so far...)
