Bought the DIR 615 rE. Works great and connects to my Samsung BD C6500 BluRay player easily enough. But the connection seems to hiccup occasionally and at least once per video file the connection drops, then by default my player skips to the next file. So I have to stop, restart the original, skip ahead to where I was and continue watching. this is annoying to say the least. Is there a way to boost signal strength to prevent these hiccups?
My only real change from default settings has been to set it to WPA2 AES.
-
How are you connected to the 615? Wired or Wireless? If wireless, try setting Single mode G. I would also disable Short GI under advanced Wireless and Enable Multi-cast Streams under Advanced Network.
-
Thanks for the response. I am connected wired to the PC (running windows 7) but wireless to the Blu Ray player, which is having the issues.
What exactly is the Single Mode G setting? I sort of assumed that meant it would drop everything from an N network to a G network?
-
Yes, it is. If you have a N supported device, you can use it. You might try N mode only for a test. Then try G mode only. Also depends on how far your play is away from the router. Of course closer is best. Are they any other wireless routers, or cordless phones around that use the same 2.4Ghz frequency. These can interfere and interrupt WiFi connections.
-
Nothing should be causing interference from us (cordless phones are dif freq, microwave not in use, other computers not even up and running at the time). I am going to play with a few of those settings and hopefully that helps. I'll post back.
-
OK, You sure the cordless phones are on a different freqency other than 2.4Ghz? If there at 5Ghz, you should be ok.
-
Yeah we bought 5 ghz phones to avoid those issues.
I did the changes you mentioned and it seemed to break the DLNA. Multicast enabled seems to completely block my computer from being seen. I am now resetting things and will make a one at a time change to see if i can get better service from the router.
-
Ok, Guess you can turn off Multi-cast streams. I would try G mode only for now and do some testing. Then switch to N mode and test. See which one works better for you. Let us know how it goes. How far away is the player from the router?
-
The router is maybe 20 feet away, 30 at most with little blocking it (a couple of standard house walls). But as it connects fine and only has blips I doubt that is an issue.
Anyway, all the changes I made messed things up royally and the DLNA would not work at all. So I just hit the reset button on the router and set it up again. The only changes I made were WPA to WPA2 with AES and the Network name.
Then i discovered the unknown button on the side of the router. It doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere but an internet search lead me to believe it might be useful. The Bluray player has a PCB setting. If you choose this then run upstairs and hit the button on the router it instantly connects with no problems. Then I just watched a 1 hour tv show in XVID format with no issues. Hopefully this keep up. For now I won't change a thing.
-
Button on the side is WPS, and your lucky if you got it to work the easy. Its known to have issues. Good job though
-
Well so far so good. Computers are so much better at keeping wifi going than stand alone machines like Bluray players. I do understand that, though I wish they wouldn't market these things as easy enough for anyone to setup and use. I spent all day messing about with it and I know a littler about computers.
-
You and me BOTH. Its marketing. If it said on the box "10% liklyhood of being a total nightmare" who would buy it? Some of it is a learning curve. Once you have a basic understanding of how everything works together, it actually becomes fun, like a puzzle. But even I get frusterated. When you hear me swearing...thats when you know I am learning :-)
-
Well the router and BluRay player are back to fighting again. I had one day of bliss I guess. Back to losing the signal during a movie and cutting out. Push the button on the side and all is well, but that becomes quite the running back and forth.
I guess the biggest issue is trying to pin point a problem area so that I could call support for either machine, but I know this will be a pass the buck type issue and blame the other guy.

When you think you've exhausted everything and are close to throwing it out, you might want to check out: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=13599.0
Maybe it solves your problems and you should be able to easily to revert back if it doesn't.

Can you try using the BD player in the same room as the router by chance? 20-30feet should be ok however I'm curious if it might work better at closer range. Say within 5-10 feet.
-
Sadly I would need a very long network cable to do that or else send all day moving my desktop.
I may try the DD WRT firmware in the future if this problem doesn't go away soon. I'll just need to set aside a little time to do it.
-
Kewl, let us know how it goes. Seems odd that it worked for a day now is back to having problems again. Any chance you an take either router or BD player or both to a friends place to see if it tracks? Might be worth a test. Also curious if you open the WPA for not no password does the same thing happen if you can connect to it?
Any other WiFi Aps in the area by chance?

Just a quick follow up. I think I now have my issue figured out. I am not sure what was dropping the ball, it was either the router or the bluray player or the dlna software, but I do know why it was dropping out. Seems if you run other programs with UPnP port scanning abilities (ie bit torrent) it can mess with your system. Stop using that software and the DLNA runs smooth and nice. I am able to stream 720P video with ease to my Samsung machine.
Thanks for the help. Thought I would post in case people with the same issue do a search.
-
Good to hear you seem to find the issue. Ya you have to remember, running other downloading SW in the back ground while streaming video data will have an impact on things.

Hi,
I just sign up and I have similar issue with my DIR-615 Firmware Version: 2.25 Hardware Version: B2.
I have 2 PCs connected by network cable to the router and multiple wireless devices in the house.
Recently connection start dropping couple times a day for all devices wired and wireless.
Only way to restore it is to power down / up the router.
I found one similar issue on web where one guy solved the issue by lowering the bandwidth on wireless network.
Cheers!

Have you setup static IP addresses for all of your devices? Does it do this if you shut off all the wireless devices to test?
