Title: Web Filtering doesn't work when linked to MAC address
Post by: art2111 on January 05, 2011, 02:47:41 PM
Hi,
My DIR-655:
Hardware Version: A4
Product Page: DIR-655
The problem is that Website Filer doesn't work if on STEP 3: SELECT MACHINE of Access Control the machine was selected by MAC address. When the machine was selected by IP everything is fine.
The problem is that IP addresses are assigned dynamically, so how to make sure that the policy would be applied to the same machine?

I recommend setting Static IP addresses for all your devices on the router so that it will maintain the same IP address for each device. Then try to set the filter.

Thank you. I would prefer to keep DHCP address assignment: the problem I found is a real bug and must be fixed.

You still use DHCP, just do a reservation for the system you want to control.  That way it always gets the same IP address, but you don't have to configure it manually.

I don't think its a bug since the filter probably required the IP address to be set to static. If the filter was able to set the IP address and the addressed changed then it would break the filter. Hence you need to set Static IP addresses.

In that case GUI should block the provisioning of IP address if it's not a static address.
Also it should be noted somewhere.

Thanks, please let me know how to configure the reservation.

This option under Setup-Network Settings, it uses the machine MAC address to reserve the machines IP.  Find the machine under the Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients list, click reserve, click save under Add DHCP Reservation and then Save Settings at the top.
