Title: Does upgrade from 1.07 to 1.09 destroy your data?
Post by: rfl on January 06, 2011, 12:54:04 AM
I have 2 1TB drives, in standard (no-RAID) connfig.  I have no place to back-up the approx 1500GB of data.  Has anyone actually made this upgrade and kept their data?  Please, I don't need to be told about the importance of data backup, I just want to know if anyone has sucessfully done this.

I have upgraded from v1.04 to v1.08 with no problems with 2 x 500 gig drives ext2, I have since replaced 1 x 500 gig drive with a 2TB drive ext3, so I now have 1 x 2TB ext3 and 1 x 500 gig drive ext2 running in standard mode.

There is still no substitute for a backup...

Also, remember that it is strongly recommended that after the upgrade is installed you should use TOOLS and the Restore option under DEFAULTS: to restore the system to factory default settings.  Before you do this, you need to record all your current settings so they can be manually re-entered.  The options to "Save Configuration Settings" and "Restore Configuration Settings" do not work.  There seems to be no way to create a file that contains the current settings, so you need to manually record the information in a document or save screen copies of the configuration settings. Hope this helps.

uhhh - if I recall correctly, there was a change made somewhere around 1.05/1.06, that requires a reformat to function properly - as I recall it does not request a reformat, and will appear to work, but a format is recommended, you might want to check the firmware notes and be guided accordingly.

As I mentioned I have formatted the 2TB drive ext3 since upgrading to v1.08 but not the 500GB ext2 drive, I have seen no problems at all and have been running like this for almost a year now, since my 500GB drive is full I will be getting another 2TB HDD (if I can stall buy one that does not have 4k block size) and formatting it ext3 as well so I will not bother with the 500GB drive.

Thanks for your concern fordem
