I have a strange issue maybe someone can shed some light on. I just recently bought a 4500 and the router seemed to be running fine with 3 computers hardwired well over 6 days of up time. Every time I set anything for wireless on the 4500, I may get an uptime of 2-3 hours and then the modem jumps offline for a quick reset. Within seconds, I usually back online, but this is totally annoying.
Security Mode: WPA/WPA2 – Personal
WPA Mode: Auto
Cypher Type: TKIP and AES
Group Key 3600
Running Mixed Mode N and G only. ( Have tried other settings here )
802.11 Band is 2.4Gz
Auto Channel Enabled
Channel Width is Auto
Firmware Version is 1.23
Comcast Cable Company

You said the modem jumps off line for a quick reset? You mean the router?
Are there other WiFi in the area?
Any coreless phones in the house that use 2.4Ghz?
Do you have any Iphones on the household?
How about setting your wireless devices on Static IP addresses.
Try single G mode only at 2.4Ghz for a test.

There are other WiFi in the area, I compared my channel to all the neighbors and made sure i was running on a different channel. Thou I just moved in this area and where i lived before with no wireless around me, It still did the same thing.
I checked the spec of my cordless phone and it runs on a 1.9 Freq
I don't have any IPhone in the house
Right now i have it set to G mode only and it has currently been up and running for about 4 hours. Though I know the wireless device which is a D-Link DWA -556 PCI Express Adapter will operate on N mode. If G mode stops the quick reboots than I will run it in that mode.
Also, I notice the signal is LOW, this is due to the amout of walls it has to travel through. Can anyone recommend any stronger antennas or something to maybe boost the signal.
Will post some more info in a few hours or so.....based on the test.

After G mode only try N mode only for a while and see what happens. Ya if your running WiFi thru alot of obstructions, that will impact signal strength. Specially at 5GHz. Only if you can do direct line of sight with out any obstructions or just thru one wall. LOL 2.4Ghz is best.
You might think about maybe doing and AP that you could bridge to the 4500 signal. Sounds like you need to get single down farther to where your needing it. Hawking makes some external antennas that you can connect. Someone on here bought 3 of them and said the signal was great.

I have been doing test over the past 2 days and have come to this conclusion. When I have no security in place and put the router in INVISIBLE MODE to help protect it, the router has been running 1 day and 8 hours. When i put security on the router ( WPA-A Personal ) the router will reset about every 2-3 hours. I have yet to test it with WEP. Should I go ahead and test this mode or does anyone have any ideas?
Also I know my wireless is running thru a few walls, does this affect the amount of errors i receive? I went to statistic and after 1 day and 8 hours of up time this is what it reads.
Received : 140756 .
RX Packets Dropped : 4500 .
Errors : 48228 .
Seems high yes / no?

What hardware version do you have? A1 or A2?
There will be Errors seen. Have you been testing with just one WiFi device connected? Make sure all others are not connected or turned off if you can do this.
How old is this unit?
V1.23 is a stable and working version. It should be working well for you. Seems like there might be something around interfering or there is a possibility the unit is bad.

Router has been up running up with no security for: Connection Up Time : 2 Day 2 Hour 31 Min 28 Sec .
I looked on the back of the router its Ver. A2
Only one WiFi device has been connect the entire time of testing.
This router is roughly 1 Month old and was bought new from a local store
Updated to Firmware Version : 1.23NA, 2010/04/15 since the day of purchase.

I also been checking that no other devices have been stealing signal based on the router has no security in place.

What wireless mode are you currently testing?

I have tested all 3 modes.
G Mode only @ 2.4
N Mode only @ 2.4
G and N Mode @ 2.4
Do you think i should return the unit and try another one? I would think as long as the device is compatable with the mode the security shouldn't be an issuse. My thoughts at least.

Ya, I Think if you've tried everything and it only does with when Security is enabled then there could be something wrong with it. IT would be interesting to know if you next one you got does it as well. I hope not. These routers are really good. I love my 2.

Is your wireless NIC capable of AES? TKIP is not only less secure, but depends on software for encription, while AES uses hardware. For this reason TKIP is much more ****e to driver issues, and issues with the wireless utility. If using TKIP its very important your using Windows wireless Zero and have all the latest OS updates.

Sorry about getting back to everyone so late. With my recent move and what not just took forever.

As some of you may have read my post I was having a few disconnect and connectivity issues. I tried a lot of different settings with the help of Fuzzy and the forums. My ultimate goal was to not give up on the 4500 and to exchange the unit for a different one, thinking mine may have been defective. So I took the unit back and brought home the new unit and set it up exactly the way the forums suggested, and BINGO the unit has been running flawless over the past few weeks. Currently running as we speak: 1 Wired Xbox, 1 Wired computer, 2 Wireless Laptops, 1 Wireless Desktop, 1 Wireless XBOX and 2 Direct TV boxes that were set up ( Don’t know much about the TV Boxes but it all works ) Needless to say I'm happy with the end results.

Disclaimer: Getting a new router helped my situation YES, but this was after extensive test with the very knowledgeable people on this forum. This may not be your solution, as you may just need to run a few more test and see what is working or not working for you.

mines is a year old. i look thru op entire post and i dont have as many problems with the resetting or anything else but i have notice alot of drops. and im not sure if i should get a new router. thats alot of drops dont yall think
im going to try the new update and see what happens from there.

Does this happend with Single G or Mixed G and N at 2.4Ghz?
Are there any cordless phones around in the house? Any other WiFi in the area? That is a lot of errors for sure.

its alot of different routers in my area that pop up for wifi but non inside my household
no cordless phones
only wifi in my house is the 2 laptops and the ps3 upstairs xbox hardwired.

What happens if you try Single mode G or N?

ill probably test out the different modes during the week
but i plan on updating the firmware i have 1.22na at the moment

ok, you'll see some errors however it should be that high though.
When you updated, do the following. Save off your current configuration if you have make alot of changes or such. Do a factory reset, update, do one more factory reset, do some testing before you re-apply the configuration. Test again and see if you notice any changes.

I just read this thread, and I am fairly certain that my wireless clients are dropping because of interference. However you mentioned something about Iphones. what would that have to do with anything? do they cause problems with this router?

We've been noticing some issues with some iPhones on various routers using WiFi. I've been noticing Authentication and De-Authentication log entries when my iPhone is and isn't being used.
