Title: Latest Firmware - is it ver 1.21????
Post by: Wazza McG on January 07, 2011, 01:18:12 AM
Hi All,

A while ago, this forum recommended not to upgrade to the latest firmware for the DIR-655 as a lot of people had oodles of issues.  Is that still the case?  What is the latest firmware for it anyway?  I have ver. 1.21.

The reason why I ask is that I have now have 2 laptops for the kids, and I'm not sure that if I upgrade the firmware whether I will get a better signal/speed to them of not.  I also have a repeater set up for the TV.

Any feedback or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
wazzamcg

It is not the latest, but if you are not having any issues then you don't have to upgrade.  The latest for North America is 1.35NA.  I have not had any issues with it, but everyone's situation is different.

Hi wazzamcg,

I am still running the firmware 1.21. I don't seem to have any problems.

Note: If you upgrade, you have to jump through hoops to go back to version 1.21.

But it is up to you.

So was my original thinking of upgrading the firmware going to give me speed or signal strength gains correct?  What is the main reason why we update firmware in a router?  I may choose not to upgrade again if the reasons are minuscule.  Thanks in advance.

Warren

Hi Warren,

I can't answer that. Others, who have upgraded, were not happy and had to learn how to go back to version 1.21.

The purpose of upgrading was to fix bugs in the previous version. Upgrading does not increase speed or signal strength gains.

Positioning the antennas and choosing Channel 11 to use, will increase speed.

Firmware upgrades are not like a driver upgrade.  Firmware upgrades are usually only to fix a bug where as driver updates do usually improve the performance of the item being upgraded.  Sometimes you do see a performance increase in the tranmission numbers being shown by the router after a firmware update, but this is only due to a change in the algorithm used to caulcate it.

If you got 1.21 then don't upgrade.
I got 1.21 on a A1/A2 DIR-655 and I will not change it for anything.
I got
Apple TV2
Google TV Sony Blue-ray STB
Macbook Pro
Macbook
17" iMac
Dell Inspirion Laptop (old)
and a Wii
all doing wireless
plus a Dell PC (old/2007) and 21.5 iMac and a Kodak ESP6150 printer, Dlink NAS DNS-323, Sony S460 Blue-ray all wired into it (using a gigabyte 4 port switch also off of one port) and I NEVER have any problems.
I have had the same setup on my router for I guess about 3 years or more.
It does not fail, don't have problems .
Pick channel 6 or 11 and uncheck Auto roam channels, for me I get a great signal (everything is 80% or better on 802.11N).
Here in Miami,FL in a townhouse, I search for networks and I got like 7 wireless AT&T u-Verse ones around plus 5 others.
So I get a lot of problems if I let it automatically search for a channel because just about everyone is on channel 1. Just set a channel high up and forget about it.
The only thing is my daughters DSlite will not connect because I use WEP security. The Sony PSP will connect but for the DS I would have to lower or remove the security.
Just never upgrade the firmware.......
"If it ain't broke.........don't fix it"
Just do not upgrade the firmware.......not worth it.

I have Dir-655 A4 and ver 1.21 and I want to use shareport. I can't get Shareport to recongnize my printer. Should I upgrade?  Also, when I "check for latest firmware" it responds with  "This firmware is latest version" This seems broken.
