Title: DIR-655 wired connections drops every few minutes
Post by: VLADTORO on July 25, 2008, 10:23:42 AM
My DIR-655 Ver A3 with keeps dropping the WIRED connection every few minutes or so (sometimes works longer but never even overnight)
which makes impossible to work remotely with my work computer, download big files etc.
Unfortunately it took me longer then 30-days to conduct all experiments and suggested tweaks (still NO results), otherwise I'll refund it with no hesitation.
Yes, I have no MAC filtering, all OS software legit and updated (nice try BTW), did try to upgrade the F/W (1.11 and today even 1.20) did try different channels and I use ONLY NEW expensive Cat6+ cables...
This is getting ridiculous - to read all those suggestions to retire all your cordless devices in house incl. microwaves, cordless phones, UPS etc.
BECAUSE they might interfere with PLATINUM DIR-655. I just can't explain it to my wife... sorry.
HOW ABOUT to provide clear STEP-BY-STEP instruction how to avoid the conflicts, how to change settings if its even possible.
For D-Link just the number of posts regarding this problem should be a signal to do SOMETHING!!!
Look at he topics list:
- Does anyone have a DIR-655 that actually works well? (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=1621.0)
- Wired connection drops when connected to DIR-655 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=1893.0)
- and many others...
I'm personally giving up with the idea to set-up the gigabit network with the DIR-655 in the center
and I'm going back to cheap $17 no-name white router which DOES WORK!!!

When considering a WIRED connection, cordless devices should not be a factor. They can possibly interfere with a wireless signal, not wired. Same with MAC filtering: no impact on WIRED connection.

So if you have established that the modem and router are communicating with a constant signal, and you obviously use premium cables, then I would suggest investigating your network card. How old is it? What are its capabilities? Can it handle CAT6 cables (or will it only use CAT 5)?

For example, I have an older HP laptop that I frequently use with a Clearwire modem. If I connect directly to the modem via LAN, I get an excruciatingly slow connection. If I connect an old DI-624 router to the modem and use my DWA-652 adapter in the laptop to connect wirelessly, I get top speed internet. Same laptop, but different hardware used to connect. The network card is so old it cannot handle speeds available today.

There is also the possibility that your network card is damaged. Try installing a different one and see if you get a stable connection.

Good luck.

Cordless phones CAN cause reboots. That would effect the WIRED performance.

Sorry, my mistake. I thought the cordless phone could only interfere with the wireless connection. Thank you for the correction.  :)
