This is probably just user error here but need some help from the pros
I am not able to browse my local area network. I get internet fine.
I have a vista laptop connecting wirelessly and the dir-655 is connected to a giga switch. The rest of my network is connected to that switch.

Make sure on the Advanced > Advanced Wireless setup page theat WLAN Partition is unchecked.
-
thanks, it is unchecked.

Check all / any security software. Some can block the SSID and some others can block the NetBIOS name resolution.
-
I don't find anything blocking. I disabled the firewall just in case. No go. I am sure its something relatively simple that my noob brain is missing.
-
Do you at least have "things" to browse on the network? If you do not have network shares or printers, you may not see anything.
-
I have a network of probably 10 computers, a few printers and a server.
Everything that is wired sees each other. Only the laptops that connect via the wireless will not browse the network. I can ping the other computers and get a response but nothing shows in network neighborhood.
this is a mixed network of linux, win 2000, xp and vista computers. The linux box is my firewall and router to the internet. The DIR-655 connects to the network via a giga switch. I have the IP of the linux box entered in the 655 as the gateway. It works fine.
I do have the lan as a different sub network. I had tried to change it to the same but got an error and the wireless internet stopped working.
-
I figured out the problem but not the solution.
My DIR-655 IP address is 192.168.0.1
My Gateway address is 192.168.1.222
The DIR-655 software won't allow the wan ip and the lan ip to be on the same subnet but I need it to be. Is there a way to do this?
-
You can change the LAN IP address to anything you want. I run mine on 192.168.10.1. Just make sure if you are using the internal DHCP server, that you change it to reflect the new network settings.
-
Thanks for the reply, am i incorrect in assuming the LAN ip subnet must match the other computers on the network?
As an example, if my network is 192.168.1.XXX and my dir-655 is 192.168.10.XXX - should my wireless connected computers be able to browse the 192.168.1.XXX computers?
-
If you are using the 255.255.255.0 subnet mask they may not, but it has been a LOOOOONG time since I have done subnetting stuff, I could be mistaken.
-
I am using 255.255.255.0
Would 255.255.0.0 work? I am subnet mask ignorant. among other things too.
-
Yes that should work.

Hi zag,
Who is your ISProvider?
Normally the Router plugs into the Modem in order to get the IP Address.
Anyway, in order for all computers to see each other, besides ping each other, they must be connected through the same Router, with no stops through a Switch.
The D-Link Router assigns all computer a specific IP Address. All computers must belong to the same Workgroup, but with different computer names.
You know that you can do away with all switches, by installing a Wireless Card or Adapter in each Desktop Computer, are you not? Let everything flow through the D-Link router.
