Title: Unable to get Wake On Lan (WOL) working with DGL-4500
Post by: mindbender9 on August 29, 2008, 05:47:25 PM
I have a DGL-4500 and I cannot get Wake On Lan to work outside of my LAN.

For reference, check this article out: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/29941/53/ (http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/29941/53/)

So I've created a "Virtual Server Rule" for WOL using port 9 (or 7) UDP and checked "Enable Multicast Streams", but my linux server will not awaken regardless of the app used. It used to work from the WAN when I used dd-wrt on my old Linksys.

And to clarify, Wake On Lan does work on my LAN. Not outside on the WAN.

Any suggestions or tips? Thanks in advance

On this page(http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/wake-on-lan-port-numbers.aspx (http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/wake-on-lan-port-numbers.aspx)), it mentions that a "Subnet Directed Broadcast" would work for Wake on Lan broadcasts from WAN but I don't know how to configure this on the DGL-4500.

So how do you do this? Can someone elaborate on this?

I use Dameware for my WOL locally and didn't have to configure anything on the router side. It could be the program you are using for your WOL or possibly a bios setting on the computer your trying to wake.

I'm able to wake my server up using several Wake On Lan apps by using a multicast "magic packet" over the LAN, but never over the WAN/Internet. So the BIOS is already set properly, but the router can't pass the WOL signal over from the Internet to my server on the LAN.

Also, Dameware wouldn't work for me because I'm using Linux.

I have noticed an issue with the DLink software when I use Mac address filtering through the DGL-4500. With Mac Address filtering turned on, my other wireless routers lose connectivity even though their mac addresses are entered into the DLink. If I switch mac addressing off, the other wireless routers (both Apple units setup in WDS) start to work again. I then have to switch the DLink's Mac Address filtering back on and everything works for a while again, then the problem repeats two days later.

And yes, everything worked perfectly when I used DD-WRT on a Linksys WRT54G. It's only when the DGL-4500 was installed did problems occur.

Come to think of it, I'm also prevented from using the "Gaming" settings for a game like Battlefield 2 because when it's enabled, TeamSpeak fails to connect and I'm unable to view any servers in Battlefield 2.

Hm.... seems like something's up with the DLink software. </rant>

I think we can close this thread, as I returned the DGL-4500 yesterday.
