We were getting 30s-5m drops in connectivity at intervals between 5m-10h, conditions that were hard to reproduce. I began using Ping Plotter to help diagnose the issue. We continued to have the problem, however, I could always see a connection to the router (gateway).
I called Comcast and the technical support person insisted that "it is your router" and that "I am looking at the history on your modem and you have never lost connectivity, except when it has rebooted."
At the time we had the a A2 rev of the EBR-2310 wired router which was about a year old. I had my wife go to Best Buy and get a brand new EBR-2310 which is a rev B.
I configured the router the same as the old one, however, now when I crank up the ping frequency on the Ping Plotter sfotware to ping once a second, I loose connectivity a LOT more.
The log shows dropped packets:
[INFO] Sun Sep 07 10:31:24 2008 Dropped packet from 192.168.0.161 to 209.85.171.103 (IP protocol 1) as unable to create new session

This seems to be because the router cannot establish more "sessions"? (connections?)
It seems to me that the router is establishing a session for each ICMP ping.

The previous rev A2 of the EBR did not drop like this when I pinged frequently.
Is the hardware defective? Is there a setting I can change to get the rev B to work like the rev A2?
Hardware Version: B1 Firmware Version: 2.01

seems that i have the EXACT same problem as you. i emailed D-link a few minutes ago and ill give you there reply as well. very annoying issue, i understand ;)
im with comcast as well
two things if this helps:
gateway log:

active sessions log:

-
Same problem.. my connection just dies or crawls so slow that I get connection errors every 5 or 6 minutes..
-
Having the EXACT same problem. Medium sized network w/ 22 computers. Win2K3 DHCP Server redirecting traffic to this router. As traffic increases dropped packets skyrocket.
Getting them as IP Protocol 6, 1, & 17. Makes the internet almost unusable. Disabling the DNS forwarding and UPnP helped, but its still stupid. Contemplating returning it.
-
Try crash resetting the router and reflashing the latest firmware on it
Also do not try to restore your settings from a saved config file, rather build your router configuration from scratch once again
-
Did anyone ever find a solution to this or try crash resetting the router?
I have the exact same problem on network with 10 computers and it's driving me crazy.
Thanks!
-
How do you have 10 Computers going out through this router?
What firmware version are you running?
Is this in a home or business environment?
-
The internet comes into the router and then from the router into a switch. The switch has the 10 computers connected to it.
The firmware is version 2.01
It is a small business environment.
-
I tried resetting the router, still have the same problem. I'd love to hear from anyone else who might have ideas.
-
Has anyone solved this problem? My problem is very similar. My connection will be fine for a few days, then all of a sudden I can't connect anywhere, ping my gateway, etc. At this point I can still log into the router web control panel. I can release the public IP, but when I try to renew it just hangs. I have to unplug everything (my dlink cable modem & router) and plug them back in before it will work again.
It also seems to have problems if you try and open a ton of connections at once (ie, open a bunch of different webpages). Any solutions would be great or else I need a new router.

I bought a new Linksys router. Haven't had the problem since.
-
It appears to be faulty firmware on the router.
The router becoming inaccessible periodically appears to be related to increased traffic through the router.
Does anybody know if D-link plans to fix the problem with a firmware upgrade?
Thanks.
-
i have the exact same problem, as does everyone else who has bought this...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=33-127-091&SortField=3&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=100&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&Page=1&Keywords=%28keywords%29&Local=y
I wish I could get a refund; i always assumed it was tmc.
Why haven't they fixed this? DLINK-- speak up already!
-
I am having the same problem, While downloading or surfing the web I get connection issues droping and such, And when I play world of warcraft I have huge lag spikes disconects and Really high latency issues. I am running the store baught version firmwear 2.01 right out of the box.
and aparently the website only has up to 1.05 and the better 1.05bb for other versions.
-
I am having the same problem. Intermittently drops connection to the internet/loses all packets.
EBR-2310 Hardware Version: B1 Firmware Version: 2.01
Still able to connect to default gateway (the Dlink route). Then I go to the Dlink admin web page and release and renew connection to internet all becomes well again. This is a pain, I NEVER ever had to do this with my previous router and now this happens on a regular basis with the Dlink.
Does D-Link support read this page? Someone from support offered up the standard boiler-plate in another thread, "reset your firmware". However given the number of people having this problem both here and on a quick Google search then this high number of diverse configurations would point to a firm-ware problem not a problem specifically to do with one person's hardware or router config. Not to mention the firmware for this router that is still on sale hasn't been updated since 2007.
When will D-Link be fixing this problem???
-
I'm having the same problem and i only have 2 comps hooked to it right now. this is frustrating and aggravating. Some1 really needs 2 fix this issue or at least give good instructions on how to fix the issue.
-
I am facing the same problem with EBR 2310- with only 1 or 2 ports active. Connections are dropping/timing out on a regular basis - number of times per day. I am on Comcast broadband and connection timeout only when using router, and problems have increased with upgrade to Comcast line couple of months back. It seems that the problem happens when the router gets flooded with high traffic - images, video, or other high intensity traffic. I have tried setting back to default settings, recycling, etc, but nothing seems to help. Not sure if this can be solved via firmware/setting change or is inherent limitation of EBR-2310?
Appreciate response/pointer from anyone who overcame this or Support team
Thanks!
-
Ditto. This router appears to be a POS!

I have a similar problem here with my connection via dlink router. But unlike the others above it is caused by ' fellow apartment dwellers connections ' who hook up to my service.
I have comcast tv and internet and it only happens on the weekend and at night when the staff is off.
I had ( 3 ) Three of my big iron administrators friends , it guys, take a look over the last 8 months and they said it is the service not the machines, not the router, and not the modem.
My internet will go from 700 all the way down to 33, and stay there until the next morning. Comcast says the wiring in the building is not theirs so they are not responsible .
My solution is keep track of outages and deduct them from my next bill. Have saved about $250.00 this way. I am paying them for a certain amount of service and if it is consistently degraded or not there at all i do as i said in the previous sentence.
But for my connection it is the connection not any hardware at all.
Oh by the way, over the last 8 months, i have used 3 different computers, 2 different OS's, and 3 different routers and got the same results.

I'm having this problem as well.
I thought DLink was a quality brand, didn't expect the router to be a problem so I've since bought a 2nd one for another connection.
I think I'm going to return that one though and look at replacing the first one as well.
I'll definitely think hard about buying any more dlink products if this is the quality level and support I can expect.

Having the same problem as everyone else. This is very frustrating!!!!!!!!!!! My roommate hates me cause her internet is so f*ing bad. Does D-Link have a solution???? This is the 2nd d-link router I've purchased. I don't have a lot of extra cash to buy another one but I'm ready to flush this down the toilet and get a different brand.
I've done everything, had comcast reset the signal so many times and just had them come to the house a few days ago. What gives D-Stink????

I have the same problem with my EBR-2310, but it only started about 4 months ago (have had the router for quite a while). I see no special indications inside the log, so at my side it seems to be purely the provider (who has a name for bad connections) or their ADSL setup at my PABX. This Canadian company, whose short name rhymes with 'Give-us' tends to rummage around on the ADSL boards. But symptoms are about the same.
On a good day I get 6 Mbps for a few hours, then about 3-5 mins of zilch, and all is well again.
I suspected the router first, but as I see no special entries in the Router-log I see no way of putting the blame on the router. Also it happens infrequently. It is also a B1 with 2.01...
EDIT: I do not use torrents of any kind...

I don't use torrent or something similar. I had seven years D604 and I had never a problem. It was on day and night. The new one going in trash soon. My friend borrow me Linksys and it works without problem.

Hello, I am also having the same problem. My problem started only a couple weeks ago out of the blue; no changes have occurred in my network within this time period. Our last firmware update was 2 years ago, currently using v2.01. We also have our router to use OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220), and have had it set to this since having bought this router in 2008.

We lose access to the internet occasionally, and I have traced the problem down to either (1) the router or (2) the ISP. I am so far unable to determine whether it is the router's fault or ISPs fault.
I have also found myself unable to access http://192.168.2.1/ sometimes, giving me a connection not found/timed out/reset error (I cannot remember what it was now), and this would only occur while having lost connectivity to the internet. We can still ping 192.168.2.1 and get a response back.
EDIT: I will be trying a Firebox sometime soon to see if the problem lies in the router or not.
EDIT2: Internet went out again -- so I immediately went to check the logs in the control panel.

The main page (not logs page) loaded with a popup saying that 'not all components loaded', and it was kind of slow at loading the logs page. Wasn't as instantaneous as usual. I was also trying to connect to an FTP at the time, which is how I detected that the internet went out. I wasn't doing anything online before. I can still print to my network printer, which is hooked up to a DD-WRT router (acting as a switch) somewhere else in the house.
Internet connectivty came back after a couple or few minutes from realizing there was no connectivity.
EDIT3: After the connectivity came back up (from the statement directly above), I immediately tried to connect to FTP, and after successful logon and directory listing, I quickly refreshed the logs page in the control panel. Here's what comes after:

I'm pretty sure this is my ISP's fault. Problem seems to have disappeared. Would anyone disagree with the idea that if the router were dying or going faulty, the symptoms should be consistent? ;)

EBR-2310 HW Ver. B1, Firmware 2.01
We have been getting CONSTANT timeouts with this router connected to our cable modem. We have a small home network (3-4 PCs) doing web surfing a little music streaming. I suspect the problem is with DNS Relay(?) because streaming never is interrupted, but web browsing seems to get a never ending series of timeouts when doing DNS look-ups. I've had a ping session at times when this is happening and that will occasionally timeout.
I finally got tired of hearing "the Internet is down!" from the kids and hooked a laptop directly into the cable modem. No problem, very very fast speeds with no timeouts. Plugged back into the 2310 and the same behavior started. This product should have never been released. Too bad, I bought D-Link specifically because they have been rock solid in the past. I've given up and swapped in our (ancient) Linksys BEFSR41 and no problems so far.
BTW - seems D-Link is not interested in responding to this problem on the Support forum. I will be posting on the Amazon comments section for this product. I'd suggest you do the same where you bought - Amazon, Google Products, Newegg, CNET, etc. Good that people know what they are getting BEFORE they purchase.

I suspect the problem is with DNS Relay(?) because streaming never is interrupted, but web browsing seems to get a never ending series of timeouts when doing DNS look-ups.
Streaming is a single continuous session, whereas browsing creates quite a few sessions during the span of browsing to a single page...
I have switched off UPnP, DNS Relay and QoS. Problem stays. Mostly happens when a few computers in the network are browsing simultaneously. Indeed it could be 'hanging' (i.e. non-clearing) sessions. Must be the firmware as connecting directly to my provider does not show the symptoms...

Finally 'dropped' the EBR-2310 in favour of a Linksys E1000. Have not had any dropped connections since.
Shame, for the rest the router is a fine thing, but this issue never was solved, whatever combination of settings I used.
Alas, but I am still using quite a bit of other D-Link hardware... And they all perform well.

I have the same issue. I've had this router for a couple years. I had issues from day 1 (see prior posts), but now it's worse. I've seen reviews about overheating issues, but I don't know if that's the case.
Hardware Version: B1 Firmware Version: 2.01
Recently (for a month or so), I've had the Internet "clogging" issue as described. It would occur when opening several Web pages at once. The logs showed most of the traffic was UDP DNS lookup (port 53), so I installed a local DNS caching server on the two computers on this network, and configured them to only look up 1 address at a time. I've also tried this with DNS Relay on and off. It might be a little better, but the router can still become "clogged" for several minutes at a time.
I suspected it might be an issue with UDP traffic in general, as my VOIP phone also has issues with this router (choppy/dropped calls) and other UDP traffic can cause Web browsing to become non-responsive.
Just wanted to add my experience and investigation to the list. No solutions yet. Any more recent news?

Lately most hosting services and web-developers use the 'parallel' method of sending out data/webpages.
For this reason, now, more than ever, will the EBR-2310 'clog up' because of the slow release of 'stale' sessions. I too did have the B1 V2.01, but it now functions perfectly as a doorstop.
After moving to the competition I never needed to look back... Shame, as for the rest it is a nice router.

I've the same problem
-
Now, if D-Link, the company, would bring out new (good working) firmware to overcome this issue (either shorten the interval of holding on to sessions, or enlarge the pool dramatically), then I would, together with all current and new (yea, it still is for sale) owners jump back on the band-wagon, just to enjoy the good-working-again router, as nothing else is really an issue with this Beetle of the routers.
-
Here it is in August, 2011 and I am seeing the same problem and I have the same firmware 2.01
I am going to return the D-Link tomorrow. The salesman had nice words for the company, but apparently those were inaccurate.
In particular, I see DNS failures after a few minutes following a successful reboot. I went back to my beat up old LinkSys and it works fine, albeit slowly. I will poke around on these forums a bit more, but I am guessing that the DLINK EBR-2310 is now an obsolete piece of junk, at least for a home user on Time Warner Roadrunner.
-
I did end up returning the router. I won't be using D-Link again since it's clear they're willing to sell and not *support* things that were failing years ago. There are too many other competitors that try harder to meet expectations.

Same problem. The EBR-2310 had functioned well for about 6 months then started dropping the internet for a short time when multiple computers accessed webpages at or about the same time. Streaming devices didn't seem to cause as much problem. After suffering with this problem for about 3 months here is what I did to resolve the issue:
Solution to my problem - Change my DNS server from my ISP's default setting (Telus-Alberta-Canada) to OpenDNS (www.opendns.com). Changed both the Primary DNS and the Secondary DNS. Requires that you set up a free account, but also gives you lots of network usage data and strong controls to websites that you would like to block.
Now everything has been working well for +24hrs with lots of traffic and use that would have caused many internet not avail browser errors.

Having to change DNS servers would indicate a possible ISP DNS issue that should be addressed with the ISP. However using 3rd party DNS works too for back up.
