I am also having issues using the built in Windows Vista with SP1 and I tried backing up my computer files on both Home Premium and Business editions. I am using the built-in Windows Backup Utility "The Backup Status and Configuration" and yes I have the network drive mapped and have no problems accessing it from any computers on the network and its never asked me to enter a user name or password besides logging into the D-Link web based utility. I dont have permissions or any kind of additional user accounts and privleges setup on my DNS-321. So when I try to back up I get this error message and it asks me to enter my user name and password and then I click ok and it gives the error message: "You need Full Control Permissions for the network share. I have admin privileges Make the user s co-owner of the share, with Full Control. The network share cannot be on a computer running Windows XP Home (0X8100002A)." Whats going on here? Isn't this a linuxed based NAS?

Interesting... :o
While the NAS is Linux based, it still runs Samba which emulates SMB/CIFS (Microsoft Networking). I suspect the Samba version being used still has some bugs and thus not fully compatible with SMB 2.0 which is what Vista uses.

Ugh, bugs. ::) Squash those bugs D-Link >:(

I'm expecting to receive my new DNS-321 today and plan to do nightly backkup from my two wireless laptops. I'm amazed that such an obvious bug still exists especially since the circumstances described sound routine? The only difference in my case is that I plan to use SyncBackSE to do backups.

So will this strange behavior be fixed in the new firmware update coming soon? What about iTunes server issues with displaying Asian characters (Japanese and Chinese text) incorrectly inside iTunes?

Apparently backup from Vista still not working on 1.01 firmware. Grrrr! :'(

My Vista backup used to work but stopped working when I upgraded firmware. (I get the same error others are getting)

I just received my DNS-321 a couple of days ago, and also have not been able to get it to work under Vista Backup. This was the main reason I bought the unit. Now I find that others have had this same problem 6 months ago, and the moderator of this forum has not cared to comment on it. Sounds like I'll be RMA'ing the unit back to where I bought it.

I should have RMA'd it at the beginning and and bought DNS-323 instead. AFAIK Vista Backup works there.

I found a solution in a post on the web somewhere, and it seems to be working. I have a backup running (apparently normally) right now. I have verified that a backup set is being created on the mapped drive and that I can access it, but obviously I have not yet verified that I can restore from it. First, do not attempt to set up any users on the DNS-321 using the web interface. When I did that it just made matters worse re being able to access the NAS from Vista at all. Eventually I went back and reset the NAS to its defaults, using the button on one of the web interface pages (I forget which one). This restored the original situation where anyone accessing the NAS has full read/write privileges. When Vista backup asks for a password to log onto to the DNS-321 use "EVERYONE" as the username. I used the same password that I use to log on to the computer, but according to the post I got this tip from, any 5 - 8 character password should work. Now that I seem to be actually accomplishing what I bought the unit for, I am much happier with the product. A little better documentation and / or technical support would be nice though. You can't believe the hours and frustration I went through to get to this point.

Thansk, Somebodyelse. It seems like I can connect to it now!!! I'll try to back up and restore something to test.

My Vista x64 backup didn't work (because I was trying to connect to the 321's root directory) at first. But once I made a folder in the 321 (like "Backups") and pointed to that folder, then used the EVERYONE username and regular password (rumor that any 5-8 character one will work), and I was up and working.

Wow, this fix works very well. I had the same problem and was also disappointed with the dns321 not allowing vista to do a backup. I was using Karen's replicator to do my backups which is free and works pretty well. I wouldn't doubt it if this fix stops working if or when they actually release a fx update.
