Title: Can't connect new laptop
Post by: KMHGeorge on September 12, 2008, 05:36:55 PM
I have 2 Desktops, 2 laptops, wireless printer & a Wii on my wireless network.  I decided to use that "network Magic" program that came with the router it work OK, until now.  I purchased a new gateway laptop for my daughter.  It initially connected OK without the net work magic. I updated norton & windows. Then stupidly decided to install the network magic.  Now I can't connect it to the network.  So, I uninstalled the Network magic.  Still can't connect.  When I try to connect, it wants the my key code to the network.  No problem. I type it in. (it is the correct code)  It still cannot connect.  The laptop sees the network, but the network dosnot see the laptop.

Should I uninstall that stupid program from all the computers.  Reset the router and do it the hard way.  I I think I could do It that way.  I think there is a way to save all the current router setting and I could reload them.

Please help.  I'm about to throw something out the window!  >:(  I tried using the network magic to add "a device" ,but it want my router name and password to do it.  I didn't give it a name or password.  So, it won't work without it.  I now where to set up the pass word, but not the router name.

IREALLY would appreciate any help

Thanks,
K

Hi K,
I am sorry to hear about your troubles.

I take it that when you were saying it was asking for your key code, you meant the (numeric) PIN for Wi-Fi Protected Setup? Or do you mean a WEP/WPA Key? If you are using Wi-Fi Protected Setup I might suggest turning it off.... unless you have a device that cant live without it.... try setting with WPA (without Wi-Fi Protected Setup enabled) if possible.

Also, I would highly recommend resetting your router, if you havent already. If you have made settings in your routers configuration manager you can back them up before resetting, and can restore them if the reset doesnt help. (Goto: Tools>System>Save Configuration)

The networking software that companies provide can sometimes really screw things up... but overall they do a good job for people who would otherwise be lost in the networking process.

Let us know if either of these solutions help, if not i have a few more suggestions but they will require a little more work.

The default password for the DIR-655 is, i believe, "password" (for the "admin" account).

>> If you didnt already know you can access your routers configuration by browsing to: http://192.168.0.1/ (http://192.168.0.1)

If that password doesnt work then resetting the router will clear it back to default. there is a button on the rear of the router for a reset. you can use a pen tip to reach it.

Hi K,

The Router Name is simply "admin" without the quotes. If you were using Network Magic and turned on the Network Lock, you need to disable the Network Lock for other devices to access the Internet and your Network.

Also you may be tracking new devices as intruders. The new device / laptop may be all the way to the right. You need to scroll over to the right.

The default password for the DIR-655 Router is blank or simply blank. You need to set up a Router Password for Network Magic to work correctly.

You need to manually log into your Router Settings to set up a password for the Admin User, who is you.

I had the same issue.  I accidentally checked Network Lock.  Try going to Wireless protection in Network Magic and see if the Network Lock is enabled.

Good luck.

I have the same problem EXCEPT that I had been connected & was initially using Network Magic that came with the DIR-655.  On Friday, I removed the Network Magic from the T61 since my free trial was over & now I cannot connect via the wireless.  I reset the router, went in & setup the wireless settings again but still can't connect.  This is happening on two laptops (Thinkpad T42 & T61), only w/ wireless.  The wired connection works.  It appears that the DLink wireless adapter is not working with something although nothing has changed on the 2nd laptop since last week when it did work.  The router has wireless enabled.  The T42 still has Network Magic & T61 doesn't.  Both have SP3 of Windows XP.  I'd love to hear the next step!
