Title: dropped connections stay opened when leeching from newsgroups

so i have to restart the router if too many connections or dropped or else i'll be unable to log in

It could be a software problem with your news client or possibly news server.  Why do you think these connections are dropped?  What component dropped them?  Does netstat show them on the client PC?  Do router logs show "blocked outgoing ICMP packet" on these connections?
