Title: After ip change I cant connect to 655
Post by: Jman on January 21, 2011, 06:41:56 AM
I have a DIR-655 connected to a linksys switch via lan to lan. The 655 is on the other end of the house. I can not connect to the 655 to enable policies or make changes. I can connect for internet, thats all. I was told that I had to have the router IP close to the linksys (192.168.1.1). I wanted to change the ip address of the 655 to 192.168.1.2 . Every time I do this I can no longer connect to the 655 via lan. I have rebooted my computer and the 655. Nothing. I have to hard reset just to connect to it and start all over again. Am I missing something?

Why don't you take the easy route and just bring the 655 to your computer, or use a laptop and go to the 655 and hook up a cable to port 1 and program it to your liking.  Then move it to the permanent location.

That is what I currently have to do. I would just like the option to do it wireless if I could. I sometimes like to change policy due to kids behavior.  ;D

Using wireless to program a router is not recommended for a good reason.  Eventually, you will brick it due to corrupt signal at a very critical time.

So is there no way to connect to it after I change the IP address? I have tried wireless & Lan connections.

Is the linksys a switch or a router that has lan ports?

Router. I am running ddwrt on it and have disabled dhcp and disabled wireless. I can connect to the linksys all day, just not the 655. i can wirelessly connect to 655 for internet but not user interface. I have also tried bypassing the linksys and connect 655 directly to modem. Still same result.

Unhook the 655 from your system and connect 1 computer to the lan port.  Press in the reset button on the 655 for about 10 seconds, wait for it to reboot and then see if you can get to the config page.  If you can't there may be a problem with that router.

If you can connect, configure it like you want and save the settings.  Reboot the router and see if the settings stay.

I can reset it and it does go back to factory settings. But, when I change the IP, I can no longer connect to it.

Where are you changing the IP in:

Setup >  Internet  - This is for setting up the WAN port

or

Setup > Network Settings - This is for setting up the LAN

Network settings - Lan. Would it help if I gave you IP addresses of Modem/Router also. I am just lost on why I cant connect after ip change.

Which version of the 655 do you have, one of the new B hardware?

I would do a factory reset and reflash the firmware.  If it doesn't work after that I would get support a call as it sounds like there is an issue with the router.  Make sure you flash it from a wired system.

If it doesn't work list your complete ip addresses that you are using including the subnet mask.  it could be as simple as the addresses and the masks are causing the issue too.

2Wire Modem/Router Enabled DHCP (IP 192.168.254 - Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0)---->Linksys Router(disabled DHCP)(IP 192.168.1.1 - Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0)--->Dlink 655 (Disabled DHCP) (IP 192.168.0.1 - Subnet Mask 255.255.2550)

Go ahead and change the 655 to am IP that is in the Linksys subnet 192.168.1.2, but before you hit save changes manke sure you change the 655 DHCP server address range to match the change make your 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.XXX.  If you haven't been changing this DHCP address range after you changed the IP this can also keep you from seeing the router correctly
