Title: Random Disconnections
Post by: cm@dlink on October 21, 2008, 03:22:19 PM
im getting dissconected from the internert for like two seconds at random times, it will disconnect then reconnect within seconds, i'm using a wired connection and theres another computer on the network that uses and wireless connection.  when i plug my internet directly into my computer i have no problems at all, only when i connect through the router. any ideas?

I have the exact same issue to the letter as you, it will be interesting to see if there are others out there will the same issue and if a fix/solution will become available. I am currently running Hardware Version: A2 & Firmware Version: 1.21 ???

I had the same problem just a couple of days a go. My problem was due to windows silverlight. To correct the problem i uninstalled version 1 and intalled version 2 and everything seems to be working great now. Windows XP BTW.

Hey guys,

Well, to give a better answer to your problems I would need to ask a lot of questions. Before I get into all of that lets start with this, did it work fine just a few days ago and the problem just now is starting to occur? If that's the case you may just want to perform a system restore back a few days ago.

If that doesn't work;
-Try a different port on the router.
-Try a different network cable.
-Connect your wireless computer directly to the router and see if you have the same problems.
-Re-install network card.
-Test it out in Safe Mode /networking. If it works, then you have some type of software-related confict on your computer. If it doesn't you might need to reset the router if one of the above steps didn't work.

Best of Luck,

Russell

You are using the v1.21 with securespot firmware? Tried the v1.21 non-securespot firmware yet?
For me, revert back to v1.20, then confirm no issue, upgrade to v1.21 non-securespot firmware works fine, been running for >1 weeks now, stable.

The v1.21 with securespot simply cannot work for a handful of us in Singapore who tried all means, just keep getting the issue. All of us run with the non-securespot firmware and works fine.

Here is the non-securespot firmware:

I am having the same problems, internet going off for no reason...

Just out of curiousity, are your router's hot to the touch, when this happens?

Not sure if it's a settings, cable, firmware or overheating issue.

What makes you guys believe that the router is dosconnecting from the internet?
I've seen what your descibing on another thread but it was DNS related.

i get random disconnects after a day or two after resetting router. Turned off wireless still does it. Trying to play ps3 cant get 1 full game in most of the time. both ps3 and pc disconnect at the same time doesnt matter if one is off or not.

Not trying to discard any problems you guys have, but random disconnections can have several reasons. Channels chosen (automatic is not always the best option to go for), neighbouring channels, a client with spyware or a wireless NIC with inappropriate settings ect. So in order to solve these generic "random disconnects" you need to look at the whole chain.

So where to start looking at the whole chain and selecting channels. Would a different router be an answer?

A different router would be my last resort. Can you confirm that the Internet connection in de modem get's offline or does it really concern your wireless connection or is a wired connection also disconnected from
the Internet?

PS: don't try them all at once. Try one, try for a while and when it does not improve, move on to the next option.  8)

Wireless:
-Try different channels (start at 1, etc)
-Use laptop to spot other neighbouring wifi networks and see what channels they're on (you can even use a tool like Wireshark)
- Check wireless driver on laptop/wireless client (newer one)
- Isolate the wireles device that's disconnection (take all others offline)

Network:
- Turn off all safety features (WEP, AES etc) on router and see if that is improving connection
- Turn off firewall on DIR655
- Check internal network with : no double NAT or double DHCP (in other words: do modem ánd router use DHCP and Network Address Translating? If so, this can cause serious problems)
- Assign static IP to DIR655
- Set connection speed to fixed 100 Mbit

I've disabled wireless but im not sure where to find static ip. I have noticed now that after i change settings and reboot once i cant save any other changes without restoring to factory. Any reason for this or could it be part of the problem?

There is a reason for including a manual in the package... :-\

Still it wont let me change to static it says invalid wan when i try to save. Router still reboots while trying to save anything anyways.

Try to:
reflash the firmware, or
power off the router completely for 30 sec. and restart

I would go with what EddieZ said and reflash the firmware to the latest if you haven't already? Also what do your log say?

Said router was busy trying to install firmware v. 1.21 so i tried 1.20 that worked and has been working properly for 3 days now. Finally no disconnects.

One more reason to add to the list -- if the router updates time via ntp and the time on the server is whacked, some users will temporarily lose wireless connections.  I believe this is because the router's WPA/WPA2/etc. timers are set according to the time prior to the update.  If the updated time is too far out of skew, this will cause the wireless connections to miss their authentication windows.  The disconnection lasts for a couple of seconds.  The log will show both the time update and the reauthentication.

Users that suspect that they're having this problem severely enough should set their router to use a single stable ntp server rather than a "pool" of servers.
