Hi,
A few weeks ago I bought a DIR-655. I have ADSL2+ and a DSL-360R modem, the router came with 1.11EU firmware. It’s QoS engine worked like a charm – with giving the torrent’s port the lowest priority (255) I didn’t have to limit it’s speed in the client. It wasn’t even noticeable.
But a week ago the router suddenly started dropping the ADSL connection in every two minutes or so. After shouting with my ISP’s helpdesk, playing with three routers for hours I found out that it happens only when the traffic shaping is on.
D-Link’s support said it might have been because the DSL-360R is not working fine with the DIR-655’s QoS engine so I got a DSL-321B from them for testing. Unfortunately the same happened with this modem. Than I found out that there was the 1.20EU firmware out. I upgraded the router than the connection became solid, BUT.. the QoS stopped working somehow. I got an other DIR-655 from D-Link Hungary as well (thanks!). I tried with this one and it produces the same error.
So now, if I have firmware 1.11 and QoS on, the connection drops. If I have firmware 1.2x, the connection is solid, but the QoS is not working properly. Not working means:
- If I set HTTP’s priority to 20, and FTP’s to 220, and start downloading the really same file from the same server but via different protocols, the downloading speeds are nearly the same.
-If I set the priority of the torrent client’s port to 1, and start downloading, I can still download via HTTP for example. I tried it in the first days when the router worked fine and in this case even the wasn’t working. Nothing but torrent.
-If I set the priority of the torrent client’s port to 255 and run speedtest.net, the pings are quite high, and the speed is slow. Sometimes really slow, sometimes just like half of the max speed.
So... DIR-655’s QoS stopped working on my internet. I asked the ISP and they didn’t change anything. I tried setting the upload speed manually, tried all the options but nothing helps. Of course I tested with many computers. Originally I just switched the QoS on, gave the torrent the lowest priority and it worked.
So I really don’t understand what happened. What could block the QoS working??
