Title: Active-TV?
Post by: greekstile on October 28, 2008, 01:42:13 PM
So what's the deal?  Does the DSM-750 not have Active-TV like the DSM-520 does?  It doesn't quite seem right that a superior product would have an inferior feature set.

I know there was a thread about this 6 months ago, where there was basically no answer given.  Are there no mods or devs that browse the forums and can answer simple questions about their products?  Perhaps it's in the works with a future firmware upgrade?  I know there are plenty of credible webistes out there that have reviewed this product and commented about Active-TV being available on the DSM-750.

Take this one for example:

http://news.cnet.com/military-tech/8301-17938_105-9785946-1.html

Now, this information had to have come from D-Link, since as of 9/07, the DSM-750 wasn't yet available.  Not to mention the fact that is states the DSM-520 would be receiving the Active-TV upgrade via firmware update.  How can information like this be published, by credible websites, and have it totally be false?

So what's the real deal, D-Link?  I'd really like to know how your flagship media extender has less features than your previous model that had been around for 2 plus years.  Your paying customers greatly appreciate any information you can give us.

The DSM-750 does not have any plans to support ActiveTV. The Main feature of this device is the Media Center Extender option. This function is much better then ActiveTV.

I appreciate the response.  But I disagree with your assesment that Active-TV is better than Media Center.  It's pure preference, and it still would be nice to have Active-TV in addition to the current capabilities of the unit.  Obviously, the unit has the hardware capability.  It would be a nice value added feature to have.

According to the AVS forum, Active TV is no longer in develoment.  Try PlayOn from media mall also.  It's a uPnP server and supports Netflix and Hulu in the current beta.  They don't support the DSM-750 currently, but it works on my 520 and should work on the 750 in media lounge mode.

Yeah PlayOn is taking over now. Just load it onto you PC and you will see it as an available media server.

I would recommend downloading the beta and check when we release the next firmware update its great and there is so much content to watch.

I've downloaded and installed the latest PlayON beta.  The DSM-750 sees it as a media server in medialounge mode, but when your browse and try to play any video, you get the "Video not supported" error.  Perhaps the new firmware for the 750 will fix this?  When is this going to be released?

Make sure you have the latest version of PlayOn.  If that doesn't solve the problem try turning off your firewall and anitvirus.  If that doesn't help send a support request from the software  (Double click the icon and go to general settings).  Other people have reported that they are responsive.

Do we know for sure that as of right now PlayOn works with the 750?  Can anyone confirm they currently have it working?

I get a lot of "Media not supported" error messages.  Even with Windows Media files!!  I'm slowly starting to regret that I purchased this unit.  Originally I got it just to record tv programmes in Vista Media Center, and it does this just fine.  However, if you want to do anything else with this extender, I'd say your pretty much out of luck as far as any other add-ons go.  I successfully have an add-on called Radio Time running in Media Center mode, and I also had TV Tonic going, but they have recently halted all support of their platform.  Now I don't know what else to use as far a internet based video podcasts goes.  The DSM-750 is really going to have to do some work on supporting more file formats.  As it is, it's nothing more than a mediocre media extender :-(

The PlayOn service was not functional with firmware 1.01 update to 1.02 and PlayOn will not work properly. PlayOn was not supported in the previous firmware.
