I purchased the D-Link DNS 321 along with a WD 750gb drive.
I installed the drive and whenever I clicked on the utility it would not take me to the Format screen. I called support and they claimed it was because I only had one drive in. I did not believe them but I decided to purchase a second drive. Now with 2 drives in it is still doing the same thing.
I am using Vista Home and tried using both IE and Firefox.
Any idea's???
Thanks!

Can you explain "will not take you to the format screen". When you go to the devices status tab, are the drives listed? Also what is the model # for the 750GB you are using?
-
When I click on the Configure button it takes me to a login screen. I enter the username/password and it takes me to the set-up page with the tabs set-up, advanced, tools, status, support and logout. In the status tab it is listing 0 drives. I have one drive that is a WD Caviar 750GP and the other is a WD Caviar 500 Blue.
-
Have you also tested these same drives in a PC? We have tested 750GB drives here without any issues.
-
These are both brand new drives. I only have a laptop computer so I can not put it in my computer.

You can pick up a USB to ATA/SATA bridge, such as the one pictured, quite cheaply from several places - I think mine was $19.95 at TigerDirect - and it comes in quite handy at times.

I am having the same issue. I have 2 Hitachi 1TB drives that the device won't recognize. When I go into the web page and view the status, it does not show any drives attached. I've tried one hd at a time in both bays and it still won't recognize them. These are brand new hard drives. Is there anything that needs to be done to prep the drives before installing them?
-
I was finally able to get mine to recognize but was never able to get it to format. To recognize you have to wait a VERY long time until the light stops blinking then try to format.
I had two other coworkers try to format on their computer networks with the same failed results. I finally got a different enclosure and it worked perfect.

What model # hitachi's are you using? We have noticed some HW changes in the newer model Hitachi drives and want to confirm if you are having an issue with a newer model.
-
Model # on both is HDT721010SLA360.
I left both drives in the enclosure for several days hoping they would finally be recognized, but they have not been. Both hard drive lights continue to fast flash.
-
I've had the same problem with Hitachi HDT721010SLA360's, This is the 2nd DNS323 I've tried after exchanging the first one.
I can get the drives to be detected after flashing firmware or restoring default settings, but after shutting n and restarting the drives "disappear".
When they are in the "disappeared" status the drive light on the dns323 is flashing.

Re: hitachi 1010drives,
I am in the process of testing that exact model. Something has changed on this latest version of hitachis drives and we are in the process of working out what it is and how to support it. Right now the only option is to different drives until we can discover what is causing a compatibility issue.
-
I verified that the enclosure works - I had a Seagate 160GB drive and plugged that in. It worked and I was able to format the drive.
Now I have 2 1TB hard drives that I apparently can't use. Is there going to be a fix for this in the near future? Is there a list of compatible hard drives for this enclosure?
-
I also have a Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B 1TB drive that my nas doesn't recognize. It works for my Samsung 640GB and 1TB drives.
I have a DNS-323 running 1.05 firmware.
-
No dice on Hitachi 1TB (tried 2)
Model: HDT721010SLA360

Obligatory "Me too"
Trying to swap out 2 350 GB hitachis in a DNS-323 for 2 1 Tb 7k1000.bs.
I actually RMA'd the ones I had bought originally, on the offhand chance TigerDirect sent me two bum ones.
-
The Deskstar 7K1000.B - Model HDT721010SLA360 hitachi drives are currently not supported we are looking into this issue with this model of hard drive.
-
Same deal with the Hitachi's. I too send them back thinking they were bum because the Newegg reviews reported a lot of DOAs. Oops.
I hope these drives will be supported soon. Not thrilled about eating the cost of them.
-
As of last night a fix has been found however we still need time to implement the fix.
-
That's terrific! It's great to hear you guys are on top of it. Definitely a sign of good service on your part!
-
Is there any approximate date for the new firmware or any fix any soon ? I'm sure I'm not the only one waiting for this as we just can't use it right now.
-
You can still use the drives by doing a soft restart from the web interface to have them recognized. We have to test the drives thoroughly and add the fixes to firmwares for all 3 current nas products so it will take some testing time but hopefully a quick turn around. We don't give dates for releases due to unseen 'changes'.

Is there a way to restart the sytem with an commandline script?
What if i have a raid with two differnt disk. One will recognized an one not?!

An additional "obligatory 'me too'".
Looking forward to the fix!

I unfortunately saw this post too late and purchased two of the problem drives to upgrade my 323. Unfortunately even when a soft reset gets the 323 to recognize the drives, they seem to "fail" after about 10 minutes. They are fine when connected to any other machine (Windows or Linux). Even if I have the 1tb drive in bay 2 the drive in bay 1 (not one of the affected drives) will fail along with with. A soft restart will get them going again but only for about 10 more minutes.
Is there any plan to beta test the new firmware?

We are verifying a new fw for the hitachi fix this week. Hopefully if all goes to schedule you will have a firmware to fix hitachi hard drive recognition soon :).

One would think that a simple fix for Dlink would be to make a "double boot" part of the boot process itself. A hard boot, ac on, would toggle a switch that identified the completion of the initial hard boot and then the unit would immediately perform a secondary "soft" boot and clear the switch.
-
Its hardware detection and has to do with CPU timing. Adding a secondary check is a makeshift way of fixing it and its better to just nip it at the source.
-
Its such a relief to hear dlink is working on the fix. I too bought 2 new hitachi drives with my dlink 343 and now i have a chicken and egg problem.
I put the 2 new HD into bay 1 and 2 (top 2) and as advise did a soft reboot and once it recognize the HD, i did a raid 1. A few days later, i bought another 2 HD (seagate) and put in bay 3 and 4. But when i tried to go to to config page, it say my drive sequence is wrong and only gave me an option to shutdown.
I realise this is beacause it doesnt recognize my 2 hitachi HD and so 343 sees bay 1 and 2 empty and bay 3 and 4 with HD thus triggering the 'drive sequence is wrong' error.
Because now i cannot do a soft reboot via the config page, i cannot use my 2 new HD. I find it frustrating that the config page will not allowed you to do anything if the drive sequence is wrong.
Just praying for the new fix for the hitachi so that i can use my 2 new HD.
-
That is unfortunate. Try detaching all four drives and boot up the unit to get into the web based UI. Then attach the four drives drives with the unit on still and reboot from the UI. This may work for you, just an idea to get your unit going until the firmware release.
-
Hi ECF,
Thanks for the prompt reply. May i know is there any planned release date for the new firmware for DNS-343?
-
Sorry I don't have this information available to me.

This was a response to my post:

I would agree that my suggestion is a "makeshift" way of fixing it and your suggestion that "better to nip it at the source" is truly the better solution.
But one truly has to wonder, now weeks later, whether Dlink can "nip this at the source" at all. And whether my proposed makeshift solution wouldn't be an easy fix to implement right now until they figure out a way to address the timing issue once and for all????

Yes, It has been a long and agonzing wait for me. The administrator mentioned the new firmware would probably be ready in a week but its been close to a month now???
-
Two months, now!

There is beta code available on the child board labeled...Beta code!!

Its been so long now (6mths !!). Had dlink come up with the fixes for Hitachi HDD ?? I am so sick of pulling out my HDD and restarting the NAS everytime i start it up >:(

Btw. I am using DLINK 343 and not 323 as used by the threadstarter ? i am still waiting for firmware 1.03
