Title: Is anyone having success with the SecureSpot service on the DIR-655?

Is anyone having success with the SecureSpot service on the DIR-655?

I upgraded the DIR-655 to firmware 1.21 with SecureSpot.  I was interested in seeing f this service was any better at blocking access to “bad” internet sites than other software based solutions such as Symantec Internet Security 2008 with parental controls.

I have noticed some slow down in performance but have not yet measured them with HTTP Analyzer, but I will do that soon.

The real issue is that the service does not appear to do anything.  No, or very few, sites are blocked when first loaded and I can navigate through “bad” sites with no problem.  These are sites that are well know and are blocked by software solutions.

No SPAM email has been tagged.  I have received 26 obvious SPAM email in the last 48 hours since I set up the SecureSpot service and not one was caught.  I will be happy to pass them along if interested, but they are so obvious that my ISP rejects them as SPAM if I try to forward them.

I contacted tech support on this issue first through email.  I was then contacted by phone and returned the call.  I spent some time on the phone, but nothing has been resolved.  They had me do the obvious like clearing the browser cache and I have even restarted the computers and rebooted the router.  We also changed some setting on the management console to ensure that all was set up right.
Interestingly if I am on a page that should be blocked and click the browser refresh sometimes the site is then blocked.

Below is the test of my email exchange:

Problem...
The spam feature does not appear to work. I received at least 10 SPAM emails today in Outlook 2007 and not one of them was tagged as SPAM.  The site blocking also does not appear to work.  Several old and very common sites are not blocked including www.persiankitty.com and www.adultfriendfinder.com among others.  Some sites seem to be blocked but only after refreshing the browser and sometimes not at all, including www.alt.com.  Running DLINK DIR-655 Firmware 1.21 with secure spot.  I have Vista business and XP pro with all the latest patches and updates.

blainem,

Make sure under Tools --> Syslog, you have "Enable Logging To Syslog Server" disabled.

Make sure on each computer (or on router) that you set "Parental Controls" and then "Site Categories" and disable some of the categories.  (I'm sure you have, but just incase they didn't take you through the obvious.)

Thanks for the suggestion but I had already done as you suggested.  I have found that sites are blocked only if you refresh the page or try to open a link in a new window or tab.

Rarely is a site blocked when first opened or while navigating the site normally.

I still have not had a single email tagged as SPAM by the service.

Cheers
