I've had the router not quite a week, and from ther very start it has been restarting the wireless every hour or two.
Firmware is 1.21
The logs show this:

Now, that port number, 42933, was one that I used for torrents several days ago. But I have since switched the ports. I have heard that users with BitComet torrent clients continue to request data without regard for whether the person is providing it.
So, my current guess is that I'm having flooding issues. But does anyone has any suggestions I should try?
-
Block the old BT port 42933 in your modem when possible.
-
Unfortuntaley, that isn't an option. The modem is service locked, and downloads all it's settings from my ISP. Though I can change the config if I unplug it from the ISP, it is just written over when I reconnect.

Hmm, that's quite awkward. Usually these connection attempts disappear after a couple of hours.
Do you have a static IP from the ISP ?
-
Yes I do.
It's becomming less and less frequent now, the disconnections. I have only lost it once in the last 4 hrs.
I haven't had a torrent program on in over 4 days now though.
And I'm not 100% sure that this is the problem. I am assuming that it is, because I had the same problem last year with a different ISP. They were the ones that actually warned me about BitComet users. Their solution was to give me a gateway that could handle 15x the connections of their regular system. (It was one of those rare ISPs that never give out your information to any agency, regardless of warrants, have no maximum transfer, and have a fibre to the doorstep project... oh, and costs an arm and a leg :))
So it could be another reason for the disconnections.
-
Also, the entire router restarts every time I try to print something to my hp psc 1350 printer using shareport. The test page printed, but everything after that has caused the router to restart.
The Shareport utility also managed to bluescreen my XP Pro SP3, giving me a
DlinkuDSTcpBus.sys - Address ADCCB320 base at ADCCB320, DateStamp 0000000000
when a print job attempted to restart.
-
Odd, any anti-virus suites running?
-
AVG is running
-
Uninstall the AVG and try it again.
-
I had the printer disconnected all night, reconnected it today, and have printed serveral pages without problems.
If it starts acting up again, I will try uninstalling AVG.
-
I'm still getting hundreds of requests to that old torrent port per hour. (and a wireless restart every few hours) And I haven't opened the program for days.
Does anyone know the connection max for this router? I would really like to confirm whether flooding is my problem.
-
Hundreds an hour? Hell I'm getting thousands an hour and no crash.
Update: In last 20 minutes I see 1,000 blocked packet messages in the log file, so that's about 0.84 packets a second or around 3,000 dropped packets an hour.
Yes that is when app is not even open and has not been for a week.
Looks like "someone" (more like bot) is broadcasting on my IP range. Causing a lot of packet loss; my ISP fixing tomorrow supposedly. Update: Still not fixed, figures, TWC (Time Warner Cable) sucks here. Now they should it should be fixed by this Thursday, shall see.
Then again my POS USB network adapter crashes every few hours when using p2p or news groups. That's another story..
Waiting for new dlink PCI adapter to arrive on Tuesday so I can trash current. Update: Not trashed yet cause I'm having issues with my new dlink adapter too. Lame!
-
I'm starting to think that it's not BT.
It usually goes for several hours, it cuts out while I am doing something, connecting to msn, sending a command over IRC, bringing up ftp. And when it goes down... it doesn't like coming back up.

Not a single device was able to authenticate during that time, as you can see.
I notice that about 70% of the time the thing restarts after blocking an incoming ICMP type 8 (echo for ping).
All of the ICMP packets coming in are from an address space owned by my ISP.
How do I get my router to respond to pings? I wanna test to see if that solves my problem.
-
http://192.168.1.1/Advanced/Network.shtml
Enable wan ping response..
I'd use two filters though on:
http://192.168.1.1/Advanced/Inbound_Filter.shtml
Allow just your isp and deny everyone else..

I've had the router not quite a week, and from ther very start it has been restarting the wireless every hour or two.

Hi twk3,
Do you have a Wireless Telephone or his base next to the Router or near the Router? Move it away from the Router.
What is the Network Lease Time set at for leasing the IP Addresses for your Wireless Devices? Increase the length of time. I use 10080 for 7 Days.
-
My two telephones are wireless, but they are using the DIR-655 as their base, VOIP.
My current lease time is 24 hrs, but all my current devices have reservations.
I haven't had a restart since I started responding to pings. So far, 12 hrs.
-
I don't think it fixed the problem, the restarts are happening again, and they're back to being a little more frequent.
It seems everytime I reboot the router, it is able to go for about 12-16 hrs without the wireless cutting out. After that point, the wireless restarts happen more frequently.
Today it happened while I was out of the house, I had my phone with me, and my skype phone is turned off, so the only connected device was my laptop.
(EDIT: My current log is full of blocked outgoing TCP connections from my browser, blocked because of corrupted data. Have no clue it it's related.)

Hi twk3,
The only way to solve the problem, is to eliminate devices that you can do without for awhile. See what happens.
Are you using matching Adapters for the D-Link DIR-655 Router?
Are any devices, hard-wired directly to the Router? Check the Ethernet Cable for cracks and also the ends.
-
There are no wired nodes on the router.
I am using an Atheros g adapter in my laptop.
The disconnects happen while the laptop is the only device connected. (and continue if any other device is connected as well)
I will start eliminating programs and try to narrow it down, to see if it's a program doing it.
So far I have eliminated my bittorrent client, and my msn.
Next I will see if it's the Opera browser (and it's feeds updating) and then my IRC client.
-
I keep on following different programs, but everytime I think I've found a program that I think might be my problem, I manage to prove myself wrong.
Today, my computer crashed, and I got this in the logs:
[INFO] Tue Dec 02 12:29:24 2008 Dropped packet from 192.168.40.1 to 207.46.232.xxx (IP protocol 17) as unable to create new session
[INFO] Tue Dec 02 12:29:24 2008 Dropped packet from 192.168.65.1 to 207.46.232.xxx (IP protocol 17) as unable to create new session
The external IP is my static IP.
My internal network is 192.168.0.xxx
So those two private would be my VMware connections. I'm must have a setting wrong for them to be hitting the router to get to me.
So I am going to see if VMware is causing my problem.
