I've got to be missing something, after applying the new firmware I'm able to see the DNS321 from my xbox360 as a source and browse it. But when I actually try to play something (music or video) the item gets a red x or the video says that media sharing software isn't running. I'd love to use this I just can't get it to work.
Any help would be appreciated!

Is no one else having an issue?
I have the xbox 360 hardwired and it's able to sign into xbox live so I'm assuming there's no networking issues.
-
After the song that I'm trying to play gets a red X I click on it and it says that it may be an unsupported file, which is not true as I can change the source back to my server and play the same song.
-
Well, looks like this thing is going back. The whole reason I got this was to replace my windows server and if it won't stream media to my xbox this it's half useless.

I can't get it to stream properly to the xBox 360 either. I am using Windows Media Player 11 as a UPnP server and it works flawlessly. I won't use the DNS-321 UPnP right now and maybe never if it doesn't work any better than this. I'll just use WMP 11. I am currently using the NAS for backups, my media collection, and as an FTP file server. All of this works properly with the exception of file permissions in V 1.01. They have a tendency to disappear when the NAS is restarted. If D-link will post the distribution firmware, I'll roll back to V 1.00 and use that. For what I want, that will work fine. I am giving up on UPnP.
It looks like this product was brought out way too fast - before it was really ready. I honestly am getting quite frustrated myself with really nice hardware that won't work because of weak and faulty firmware and manufacturers that sell a product with problems and then do not update it any further. The best thing D-link could do is to put the source out for open source and the problems would be fixed in a real hurry.
Overall I really think this is a very nice product. If D-link would just get these problems fixed, it would be a tremendous product.

Nice, edit out my question about another product. You've got time to do that but no Dlink person has time to answer my question. And you of all people the "Technical Engineer Global Moderator" (lycan). You just made my mind up on where this useless dns321 is going.
BTW- Linksys apparently makes some quality NAS products that stream to the Xbox 360
-
I haven't had a problem since applying the firmware update. Everything streams fine, so I don't know what could possibly be causing your problem. Sorry bud.

Sorry you have not had any luck with getting your Xbox 360 working. I assume you have already reset the unit to defaults and after turning on the UPNP AV server did you click the REFRESH button? If not and the unit has not made it to the dumpster(ebay) yet then I would advise doing so.
-
Hasn't made it back to bestbuy yet, haven't had the time to go. So you're saying that I should reset it to defaults? I've already hit the refresh button and let it do it's thing.
-Landon
-
Well if you have time to give it another go I would definitely advise doing a reset to defaults and start the server again with a new refresh. When you refresh the UPNP AV server does it make it all the way to 100%? Does it time out?
Also can you play media from..say Windows Media Player 11? I just want to make sure the XboX is up to date. I was unable to play media from my DNS-321 until I verified that it had received the OPTIONAL media update on the Xbox 360 console. Once that was installed I had no issues streaming music photos or videos.
-
Yeah, I can stream from my windows server running wmp11 just fine. Reset to default and still the same issue. It also get's to 100% on the refresh as well.
-
Are running as "Root" on the interface or have you selected a folder on your drive that your media content is located in?
-
Root at the moment.
-
Try selecting a folder containing your media and not the root. I have found that using the root is sometimes an issue if you have alot of files on your drives. Have you tried it after updating your Xbox Yesterday?
-
I put some more time into UPnP on the DNS-321 and here is what I've come up with. Currently I'm just trying to stream music.
- Set DNS-321 to "Music" subfolder. I have 383 albums in the collection.
- Did a Refresh. It completed to 100%.
- Music streams correctly to the xBox 360 and to a Philips Media Player connected to a tube stereo amplifier. The amplifier is a restored 1960s Harmon Kardon vintage tube stereo. Playing CD music on this stereo produces a real sweet sound.
- The Music is organized on the DNS-321 into two Genres. Most of the music is in "Other". I also end up with a second Genre that is some of my Son's kid music. I like to play my music by Genre so this isn't exactly what I'm looking for.
- The Music file folder has album art from WMP 11 organizing the music and adding album art files. The DNS-321 puts the album art into "Photos". This could be solved by removing all the album art. Not necessarily a problem.
The real issue for me is that the DNS-321 isn't organizing my music by Genre. Before I upgraded I had the same problem. It may be that there is residue left from the previous firmware version or WMP 11 has messed with things so the DNS-321 can't understand Genre. Has anyone else seen this in the organization of the music by Genre? Is there a way to force the DNS-321 to re-organize the music from scratch and get the Genre correct?
I haven't tried this yet with the update just applied to the xBox 360, but the update appears to be only cosmetic. I'll try it over the weekend.
-
Try the update its supposed to be really good. Especially if your issue is with the organization of the files.
-
I did some experimentation today and I found that when music tracks are in one directory, the DNS-321 organizes them correctly by Genre, Artist, Album, etc. When tracks are in album sub-directories, the DNS-321 doesn't organize the tracks correctly by Genre, Artist, or Album. It also lists the tracks by the file name, and not the track name. When I ripped my CD collection to the DNS-321, WMP 11 organized the CDs by album in album sub-directories.
The music does stream properly to the xBox 360 and a Philips Streamium even if it is not organized correctly.

Sorry, I was out of town and couldn't reply. I've replaced the xbox and my router, changed the media folder to something other than root, rescanned and it still refuses to work. Is there no logging that can be done to see where this is breaking down? It is reading the files fine, but when it tries to play it fails.
Any other thoughts?

Alright, moved ALL my data off. Reset the thing to defaults and re-formated both drives and made them separate disks. Created 1 folder and put 6 mp3's in there. Go to Xbox and it does the same thing.
Logging?
-
I set up my DNS-321 UPnP to share some MP3 files under one directory. Did a refresh and then successfully streamed the files to the xBox 360.
If I were you I would look for something subtle like read only MP3 files, or try different files. Maybe there is an issue with the way the MP3 files were created and the xBox 360 can't sort it out. Try to create an MP3 by ripping from a CD with WMP 11 and see if that works. I created my MP3 files by converting from WMA files that were ripped with WMP 11.
So far it is working fine for me, with the exception of the way the DNS-321 organizes the Genre, artist, etc. when using sub-directories.

I am new to forum and have read the comments concerning XBOX 360 UPnP issues since I am having the same.
I am getting the same errors, as others, in playing back music and video files from the DNS 321 that I play back using via WMP 11 OK.
(I get red error icon under OLD XBOX player tools (pre lastest XBOX 360 Update) and now after XBOX 360 update get yellow error icon with same error message prior to update).
I have two questions concerning your feedback for resolution:
1) How do I get and verify I have the XBOX optional update you suggest to apply? I have performed an XBOX update yesterday and received and applied the update; but, am not sure it contains the "optional" update you suggest.
2) How do I set the device back to default as you suggested? I have searched the ADMIN DNS 321 web facility for the means to reset the device to its defaults you suggested; but, do not see a menu option for this.
Thanks for any help.

Is your Xbox connected wirelessly to your network?
-
If someone would be willing to send me one of the errant mp3 files that don't work for them, I'd be happy to try it on my xBox 360 and DNS-321 system and see what happens. the xBox and DNS-321 are hard wired, although I can't imagine why wired vs. wireless would make any difference.
I'll supply an email address if so.
-
It is hardwired, 100 mb. Here's a file,
http://landonandtiffany.com/music/
Can anyone speak to any type of logging that we can look at?
Thanks,
Landon

Here's a video of what the xbox is doing when trying to play the file:
http://landonandtiffany.com/music/DNS321.wmv
It's an 11mb file but it's on a hosted server so it should be quick.
Before the dashboard update it was telling me that there was no media sharing software running, even though it lets me browse to the file. Now it's telling me that the file isn't supported.
If you want to see the file playing on my windows server let me know.

OK. I loaded your mp3 file on the DNS-321 and refreshed the UPnP. The file played on my Philips Streamium NP1100 just fine. Went to the xBox 360 and it also played just fine.
So we know that the DNS-321 can stream it properly.
The part that really has me bothered is why WMP 11 can stream it to the xBox, but not the DNS-321 UPnP.
Just shooting in the dark here - I have the mp3 files I store on the DNS-321 in the following sub-folder:
Volume_1/AV Media/MP3 Files
I don't set the UPnP on the root directory, but to this directory.
I'm scratching my head at this point.
-
I've done the same thing, pointed it to a specific folder and what really irks me is that it can browse the index (I'm assuming) on the device but there seems to be a disconnect between where the file is and where the index thinks it is.
I'm really hoping that Dlink can offer some type of debugging or logging so this can be figured out.
Thanks for your help dlandon!

Sorry I couldn't be any more help.

I am having the same exact problem with my DNS-321. It shows up on my XBOX 360 as an accessible device, shows the media, but when you actually try to play, nothing. It tells you that you have possibly lost connection to the device. One thing I have noticed as well. I am running a Linksys WRT610N and it shows the type of connection based on the light color. So, Blue light=gigabit ethernet device attached and green=10/100 based device connected. On two different WRT610N routers my DNS-321 shows green. My entire network, the XBOX and DNS anyway, are hardwired using CAT6 cabling and nothing seems to work. I have emailed the DLINK tech support, but of course I have received ZERO replies from them concerning this issue. This hard drive is supposed to be XBOX 360 compatible, but is not as far as I can tell.
I have tried everything. Resetting the DNS, re-flashing the firmware, refreshing the media list under UPnP, changing ethernet cable, uprgrading router, etc. The media works with the XBOX since I can easily copy it to a thumb drive and play it from there.
So, DLINK this is your chance to help all of us out and get this working.

I was having problems with the DNS-321 and xbox playback before the firmware upgrade and was hoping it would be fixed with the new firmware release but it looks like the DNS-321 still has the same limitations. This is what I have found:
So far by process of elimination I have found out that files will show up correctly on the xbox 360 if arranged a certain way:
1. Names of folders have to be 24 characters or less & names of files must be 50 characters or less.
2. From the root directory - you can not put files more than 2 folders deep. Ex. Volume_1/My Media/My Movies/file.avi
3. Only the first 30 files will show up in each folder.
4. You can not use special characters in the file name. Example: (+,=,@,`) etc.
I'm sure there are more limitations I haven't run into yet, but so far I've gotten all my .divx / .xvid / .avi / .wmv / .mp3 files to play this way. It's a really inconvenient process but hopefully d-link puts out a fix for this.

Thought I had made a post on this yesterday but must have not clicked send. If any of you are having problems with playing content on the Xbox 360 even though you can see the content in the list you may be experiencing a bug. Currently if the third octet of your Ip address is 0, ie, 192.168.0.X, the DNS-321 will not stream content to your Xbox 360. This will be fixed next firmware however at the current time the only solution is to change network IP schemes to something like 192.168.1.X until a firmware release is published. Sorry for any inconvience for those of you experiencing this.

Wow, that actually worked. I changed my network settings and restarted everything. The video played almost instantly and so did the music. Thank you for the help and I look forward to this being taken care of. Any idea of when the next firmware will be out D-Link?
-
We are still working on finalized DNS-323 and DNS-343 firmware so it will not be worked on until after we have officially released those.

Great work around!
I updated my ip schema and am playing stream Video & Music and viewing photos from XBOX player for the first time without being tied down to WMC.
My NAS is (RAID 1, multi-user, multi-group and quotas based file server, UPnP AV server, iTunes Server, LLTD enabled, BUT NOT FTP server enabled) and went thru most of the previously suggested setup suggestions.
I ONLY have noticed one other issue at this point.
I am unable to play video files of type (avi & mp4) but can play wmv videos via XBOX player. All these are playable via WMC from the XBOX & via WMP off the NAS server. XBOX support says avi & mp4 are supported.
I used Windows Media Encoder to convert the avi & mp4 video files to wmv and they stream play OK.
Can others play avi & mp4 OK? Are there some NAS config suggestions or other ideas that can be suggested.
Thanks again for the WorkAround!!! Once all the kinks are gone, this will definitely be the MOST competitive product of its kind.

So I made the correction to my D-Link DIR-625 and changed my DHCP settings to broadcast in the range of 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.104.
Currently, the DNS-321 is assigned the IP 192.168.1.104. I had my entire Itunes Library backed up to the drive in the folder: \\Volume_1\Local User\Admin\Music\Itunes\Itunes Music and all the songs in the folder were organized by artists. After setting up my UPNP server, the Xbox 360 would display the songs, artists etc. but would fail to play any of the items.
As such, I tested by moving a few songs to a new folder in the following location: \\Volume_1\Media
Guess what, that worked!! :)
As it turns out, you cannot have your music burried in multiple folders. THe 360 will not stream it from the DNS-321 if it is more than two folders deep, as mentioned by an earlier poster.
I really hope this gets resolved since I do not look forward to rebuilding my 23GB iTunes directory. Any idea on a vague firmware release date? 1 month wait, 2 month etc.?
Thanks,

this is a basically a double post from the PS3 thread, but since I just verified that it's working on both my PS3 and 360...
It's working on mine, but where I thought I had a problem, was just something that took time.
My Setup:
DNS-321 fw1.01
DHCP based IP in 192.168.1.x range
RAID 1 with 640GB
I unchecked "root" and set it to use \Media
I put my files in Video, Pictures, Music directories respectively (with lots of sub-folders)
PS3 fw2.60, static IP
Initially, when I did it, only music files came up (the first thing I set up), now several hours later, all my movies and photos show up as well.
One annoying quirk, on the PS3, when I tell it to browse by folder, it starts with the Media folder, rather than Music, Pictures, Video. I expect that since the share point is Media, that the PS3 should start with the contents of Media, not by making me select the Media folder
Anyway, the core point is, if your PS3/360 connects to your DNS321, but shows no files, it may be that the DNS321 is still processing the files. Just like Windows Media Server does. It takes time.

Just wanted to drop in and say thank you for figuring out this bug. I was really banging my head against the wall until I found this thread. reordered my network to *.*.1.* and all is well.
Looking forward to the firmware fix.
