Title: Sudden Loss of Internet Access with DIR-655
Post by: malamin on November 18, 2008, 09:29:57 AM

I posted this on the dslreports forum before I found out about this one...

I woke up this morning to find that I could not access the internet through my D-Link DIR-655 router but my local network is still accessible. I get an internet connection when I connect my cable modem directly to my desktop, so I figure its the router.

I tried resetting everything (desktop, cable modem, router) but still no go. I had to leave for work so I can't troubleshoot further until I get home.

FYI, My setup is Comcast cable wired to the router (not sure of the current firmware) to a Vista powered Dell.

Strange, because everything was working fine last night. Any ideas?

Thanks
Maury

How about giving some more details about the router's  setup?

I have 2 PC's and 1 wireless configured in my router.  The first PC in my router had no internet access (like yours) and the second PC + wireless worked fine.
On the first PC I restored to an earlier setting, but that didn't work so I restored to current setting and my PC started working. all this took several hours of playing around, then 2 hours later PC#2 did the same thing.
After performing restore to an earlier time & back to current time (didn't work ) I looked into my router & the mac address for PC#2 was missing.
I retyped missing address & internet went to work.
I don't know what happened or why since I haven't changed My router since the initial setup.
By the way this took place on 11/17/2008
I hope this helps.

Thanks Pappy,

I can't wait to get home and try this. This is such a pain in the butt.

Well, I ended up calling (and paying) for tech support. The tech had me go through the following steps which led to success:

1. Unplug both cable modem and router
2. Power up modem first, then router
3. Log into router: http://192.168.0.1/
4. Setup Tab > Manual Internet Conection Setup
5. Under Internet Connection Type, select "Dynamic IP (DHCP)"
6. Click "Clone Your PC's MAC Address"
7. Save Settings and Reboot
8. Under Status Tab, check WAN Section to make sure an IP Address is assigned
9. Test Internet connection

It was unfortunate that I had to pay for it but at least I'm up and running again.
Hope this helps other folks...

Why did you have to go to pay for support? That sounds like a pretty standard support call.
Is your device out of warranty?

Instead of cloning a MAC address, contact your ISP and have them add the MAC address of the router to their database.  Once that is done, you never have to worry about your ISP blocking your router's access to the internet.

I suppose it all depends on the ISP and how they have their modem configured. I have comcast and they gave me a motorola modem that I can connect any ethernet device to and it will pull a public IP and get online right away whether its the router, the computer or the vonage device, they all pull an IP and get online with the modem right after doing a 30 second power cycle of the modem.
